Gods and Fate Part 2

Start from the beginning

"I, Kazuya Nagato, sole proprietor of the Black Arrows Company, and my battle pair, Mitsuki Maeda, greet Your Majesty and Royal Highness."

With pauses, the tone of one exalted by Her presence, he received silence as a response. Even if it was the Demon Lord in front of him, Kazuya showed no hint of surprise, no glimpse of weakness, nor an opening for an image contrary to what he showed the knights.

"Sir Nagato, I did not summon you in my capacity as Queen of Canary. Please, raise yourselves and sit. Sit."

They did as told. Still, they were Iris's grandmother and mother? The Queen looked like she skipped her thirties and continued aging as an Anime Mom. As for the Crown Princess, she looked like she barely scratched thirty and carried herself like the one who'll buy the beer cans for you in the relationship.

If Kazuya's being rational, he'd mark off their young appearance as teenage pregnancy, which might as well be a fragment of it if bathing in dragon blood or something somehow gives anti-aging effects.

Maids poured a cup of tea for them and laid out the snacks for everybody. They're in for a long talk, both as blood and royals.

"We've heard many good things about you from the knights, as well as my granddaughter."

"I do not believe anything expected of us is worthy of praise. Rather, I must apologize for raising my hand against a knight of the First Order."

"Indeed," the Crown Princess started. "The contention between you and Sir Guvalle has been reported, but this matter is between us and the Lautrec Duchy."

Kazuya turned to Captain Phyllis. He spilled a lot more oil just to shut them up in the heat of the moment, more like the whole barrel. Forget honeypots. Once the oil rig blows, it's all stress-eating-pots now. It'll be damn weird meeting with the Duchess again.

"But we didn't invite you for this matter," the Queen followed. "We are here to pay gratitude to you for saving Iris and the Second Knight Order."

Sure, let's go with that. He may have accidentally kissed the Duchess, but making it a flashpoint is just hitting below the belt.

Upon the Queen's beckoning, one of the maids presented Kazuya with a platter with two medals, one shaped like the ones from the royal knights' breastplate and the other in the First Order sparrow's insignia, the bird in question resting on an arrow tip, in yellow and Norwegian-colored suspension ribbons respectively. Above them were two scrolls wrapped in yellow tape and a white coin pouch.

"Initially, we intended to offer you two platinum coins. However, the growing threat of the monster breeding grounds and the Empire has put us in a difficult position to properly reward you."

"With the Queen's and Princess of Canary's Commendation to Privy Service medals and its certificate as evidence, you will enjoy certain tax exemptions and free passage in and out of cities, towns, and districts, as well as access to establishments and areas reserved for nobles," Crown Princess Aria continued off.

"And for your distinguished service in privy matters, any noble who shows discourtesy to you will mean showing discourtesy to me and the Crown."

"It's an honor, Your Majesty, Your Royal Highness. But I have to ask. How is she?"

He meant it as a deflection, a sudden change towards a sensitive question. They'll either reprimand him for overreach or find solace in his concern with Iris to challenge the Queen and Crown Princess' authority in the conversation. It was too much of a detour, too flexible for a conversation building up to it.

Cut to the chase, he wanted to say. If the rewards were hush money, why take the effort of granting him an SCPS? Queen Isabella looked at her daughter, and the latter began.
