"The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater."

JJ returned to the team, who were waiting in the sterile hospital environment. "They can't give me an update," she informed them.

Spencer walked back over to the team, putting his phone back in his pocket. "Morgan's phone just keeps going straight to voicemail," he said.

"Where the hell is he?" Emily questioned, turning to Reid as he walked over. Soren placed a hand on her shoulder, trying to provide some kind of comfort since this was what she did for him, and he didn't really know how to comfort somebody.

JJ stood up as Derek arrived at the hospital and approached them. "She's been in surgery a couple of hours," she said.

"I was at church. My phone was off," he told them, looking from JJ to Hotch.

Spencer looked up at him from where he was seated. "There's nothing you could have been doing here."

"The police got any leads?" Derek demanded, anger seeping into his voice.

"I spoke to the lead detective. He doesn't think we'll get anything from the scene," Hotch said.

"Penelope Garcia?" A man approached wearing dark blue scrubs.

"Yes," Hotch and JJ said almost at the same time.

"The bullet went in her chest and ricocheted into her abdomen. She lost a lot of blood. It was touch-and-go for a while, but we were able to repair the injuries," he told the team.

JJ looked at him, her head slightly tilted. "So what are you saying?" she asked.

"One centimeter over and it would have torn right through her heart." He paused. "Instead, she could actually walk out of here in a couple of days."

The team sighed with relief. They all believed her injury to be far worse than what it really was.

"And I'd say that's a minor miracle. She needs her rest. You can see her in the morning," the man explained before leaving.

"Thank you," JJ said.

"Rossi and I will go to the scene," Hotch spoke. "I think the rest of you should be here when she wakes up. I don't care about protocol. I don't care whether we're working this officially or not. We don't touch any new cases until we find out who did this," he stated.

A different nurse, also wearing dark blue scrubs, led them into Garcia's room where she was lying, attached to different IVs and tubes. Soren glanced away, shaking his head to try and get rid of the thoughts he was having. He didn't need to be angry or hurt right now; he needed to be there for Penelope and the rest of the team as well.

"Hi," she greeted them softly. "No tears. I'm afraid if I start crying I'll come unstapled."

"How are you feeling?" Derek asked, looking down at the blonde with concern.

"Oh... Confused... Stupid, and... In pain," she told him.

JJ stood on the other side of the hospital bed. "Are you up for some questions?" she asked.

"I never saw it coming," Garcia told them. "He seemed... Deliciously normal."
