As soon as the words leave my mouth, I kick myself for even asking him. Of course he wouldn't know. Why would a man of his social ranking have any idea what the rates are at the only one-star motel in town?

So as soon as I finish embarrassing myself, I get away from there as fast as I can. I don't see any need to prolong my humiliation longer than necessary.

I exit his office and make my way through the streets toward the motel. It's about two and a half miles from Mr. Kingsley's office, and it's already well after dark. The air is comfortably cool, and I'm thankful that at least the weather hasn't decided to continue dumping on me. All of the businesses that were open today are now either closed or in the process of closing, and the streets are more or less empty.

Even in a town as small as ours, I don't want to be out late, considering everything that has already happened. I just don't feel safe walking around by myself. I'm jumpy. Every noise I hear or car that passes me causes my heart to pound. The closer I get, the faster I walk, not caring what I look like to anyone who sees me, though I'm sure it's quite a sight.

I twist and turn, taking as many shortcuts as I can without leaving the safety of the streetlamps.

I finally see the glowing sign and breathe a huge sigh of relief.

I'm here. Thank God. Now, let's hope I have enough to cover the room.
