The car ride to Alastor's home was an awkward one.
Kira offered to just meet them at the intended home, but Jeremiah rebuked it, saying it would be faster to go together. Kira now sat in the back, silently looking out the window, sitting behind Jeremiah's seat so she could avoid his sharp gaze. The way he looked at her, like a disapproving grandfather was far worse than Freddie ever did. She couldn't tell if she had done or said something to piss him off as he kept quiet through almost anything.
What made this car ride even more hellish was that the man drove in silence. No music, no radio, absolutely nothing. This man was so ridged, did he even have a life outside of work?
Not even Elija dared to speak up. But she did notice him seeming rather down for a while now like the wind had been knocked out of his sails. He hadn't told Jeremiah about the new information about Paul's death and the connection to Cadavre Exquis and the number of feet that had been discovered.
Twenty-six.
Was that the number of people that madman had killed? From the way Yavanna sounded, none of the feet were belonging to each other, but there could very well have been a possibility as they were currently waiting on DNA tests for all of them. Though it did explain where the toes that were found in Paul's stomach.
It didn't explain why he was in that small room, to begin with. How did Cadavre Exquis know about the room? The building was old so the security cameras that were in there just didn't work given the age of the place and lack of maintenance. So that was something that couldn't be looked into even if Kira wanted to.
Paul must have run into the killer by chance, that had to have been it, but what caused the most notorious serial killer to go after someone as sad as Paul Bennington?
Was it on a whim? Or did Paul do something so egregious that Cadavre Exquis took it personally?
"You look exhausted, Detective." Agent Amos spoke suddenly it causing her to jump in her seat. She saw him readjusting his rear-view mirror to look at her. She avoided his gaze. His gaze narrowed faintly. "If you're that tired, you're more than allowed to rest until we get there."
"I'm fine,"
He didn't seem to believe her but didn't comment as he continued to drive without another word spoken between any of them.
When they arrived at the Hilmarsson household Kira saw something rather unexpected.
The blond man that she and Freddie interviewed at the church was sitting on the front porch reading a fantasy children's book.
Why was he here?
He looked up with a puzzled expression before he scowled at them. "If you're here ta see the homeowner, he's not home right now." He answered as he went back to the book. "If ya want to leave a note, you can, or a voicemail, or email. That way yous don't feel like you've wasted time instead of waitin'."
"I did call," Jeremiah answered Anthony. "He said we can wait. What he didn't say was that he already had a guest here."
Anthony eyed the older FBI agent but didn't utter a word.
"What's your relation to the family here?" Jeremiah pressed.
"What's it to ya?" Anthony asked, his voice having an edge of warning as he slowly closed the book, but kept it in his hand. "Yer business ain't no business of mine." He says suddenly but he hadn't moved from his seat. "And my business, ain't no business of yours."
