Chapter 12: Prospects

Under the setting sun, Irene's eyes became hooded with sorrow at the thought and her cold hand lifted to fidget with the pendant of her necklace as she hummed a mystique tune. "If one is gone, we carry on. Spirit as our guide," she quietly sang. "Down, down, down the road. Down the witches' road."

If the conflict in Seattle was not handled rapidly enough, the twins might have to leave sooner than expected. But she knew it would pose a problem, not only for Tony, but also for the Cullens. In fact, though she did not want to admit it, it would also pose a problem for her. She did not want to leave Forks. Despite her head knowing it was the safer option, her heart wanted to remain.

"Tame your fears, a door appears, the time has come to go."

But she knew the risks. She had witnessed them with her own two eyes. Aro was a simple man, when he wanted something, he did not stop until he got it, without caring about the length he had to go through to obtain it. He was Cruelty, Selfishness, Greed all combined. Irene knew not to face him face front. She did once and now a trail of corpses followed her ever since.

"Down, down, down the road, down the witches' road. Follow me, my friend, to glory at the end."

Irene's feet stopped moving as she stood on the edge of a cliff, the raging waves splashing against the rocks. Water as far as her eyes could see, the skyline seemed endless like a door to another world. Such a vast world and yet, it was as if it was not enough to hide from the Volturi. As if there was no corner on earth far enough where she could hide.

"It was a beautiful song," she heard.

The corner of Irene's lips curled. Even if she wanted to remain indifferent, it was impossible for her not to feel joy and serenity swell her heart hearing Edward's voice. He came to stand beside her.

"A friend of mine taught it to me when Tony and I lived in Scotland for a few years," Irene said. "It gives me... reassurance."

Edward tilted his head to the side, feigning a surprised state. "You had friends?

Irene chortled. "You're breaking my heart, Cullen."

"My apologies, it was mean," he said, gently taking her hand. The contact of her cold skin on his was like a shock of electricity that ran through his veins and warmed his beating heart. It was a sensation he adored and craved more.

Irene shook her head with a smile. "No, it was funny. But just so you know, Elric is the only friend Tony and I made. He's in fact the one who introduced us to the vegetarian diet. His kind is very knowledgeable on a vast amount of topics."

Edward frowned. "His kind? He isn't a vampire?"

"Would you believe me if I told you?"

"I trust every word you speak."

It was hard for Irene not to smile too hard. Such state of giddiness and fluster was not something she was used to. She had never gotten to know what love was in her human life and never felt attracted to anyone she had met as a vampire for none of them were her mate. So it was quite a novelty that she did not exactly know how to deal with. But it was a pleasant novelty.

"He's a wizard," Irene eventually informed. Edward blinked a few times, making Irene laugh. "I did tell you vampires and shape-shifters were not the only supernatural species."

"I know but... It's still quite surreal, I do not know how to react," Edward said. "But when you say wizards, you mean they can conjure anything and do anything?"

Irene nodded. "Yes, he gave me a bouquet of roses out of thin air once."

"A bouquet of roses?"

From the way his voice had dropped an octave and grown low, Irene knew his jealousy spoke for him, which did amuse her. "It was for my birthday," she reassured. "He gave tulips to Tony."
