"Your dad's not here?" Tony asked.

The twins and Edward were at Bella's house, just like they had agreed the night prior. However, something was odd with the twins and Edward and Bella noticed it. Irene and Tony were barely looking at each other and had hardly exchanged a word together. They weren't even standing next to each other. Tony was beside Bella and Irene was beside Edward. The atmosphere was strange and it was quite easy to understand that they had had an argument. And as Edward was a mind reader, the confirmation quickly came.

"No, Charlie left for work already," Bella answered.

Right after, the roar of a motorcycle elevated in the sky. Soon enough, Jacob parked on the Swan Residence's driveway. He sighed, visibly annoyed, when he noticed Edward and the twins with Bella.

"Why are these bloodsuckers here?"

Irene rolled her eyes and shoved her hands into the new red jacket she had recently bought.

"Jake, please, don't start," Bella said. "Irene will try to track the intruder."

Jacob was clearly not pleased to be breathing the same air as vampires, but still agreed. If there was a way to find the one who threatened Bella's life, then the opposite must be ceased. So, not so overjoyed and mostly awkward, the group headed inside the Swan Residence and went to Bella's room. The intruder's scent still lingered around. It was mixed with the humid scent of the water. First, Jacob stepped into the room and imprinted the scent in his mind. Thanks to the telepathy link with the pack, when he would transform, it would be as if the others had gone to Bella's room as well. When the scent was well engraved in his mind, he stepped outside and let Irene in without missing to side eye her, something she ignored.

People from the same species had something in common in their scent, but each person still had a specific scent. A smell is part of one's identity, like an invisible extension of someone. Therefore, it was as if the intruder had left a small part of themselves behind which allowed Irene to connect to their psyche. However, this part was still too small for her to perform a deep dive.

Walking in the room, Irene inhaled and let her finger tips brush on Bella's desk. The intruder's scent was sticky on everything, the furniture, the fabrics, the walls. Closing her eyes and activating her gift, which made her hands glow red, she connected her mind to the scent.

"How does it work exactly?" Jacob asked.

"Shut up." Eyes darkening, Jacob was about to let his anger be known to Tony for speaking to him with such disrespect, but the Goodwin boy quickly added, "I mean, Reenie needs to focus so we should all just shut up."

Tony was obviously not in his usual laid-back state. His argument with his sister made him moody, and having to be in Jacob's company made it worse. Jacob was obviously not buying his excuse but Edward's intervention stopped him from doing anything.
