A/N: In this book, at the end of New Moon, Edward never proposed to Bella, and Alice remembers bits of her human life.
---
It was difficult to make a long-lasting impression in the minds of teenagers. It had been two weeks since the arrival of the twins in Forks city and it seemed that the students of the school were now all more or less used to them. It was now as if they had always been there. Irene had also adapted to life here. Well, it was more accurate to say she had become used to it rather than having adapted. Tony was a lot more at ease in Forks High and it was mostly the doing of Bella. It seemed that the two had grown quite close. They apparently went out a few times together after school. Of course, Irene did not really approve of this. She already had a mate yet let herself grow close with someone else? It was wrong, manipulative, and cruel. And the fact that Tony knew that yet disregarded it angered her even more. Did he really not care? Why was he so attached to her? It simply did not make any sense to Irene. And needless to specify, she was still friends with the shifters, their natural enemy. Nothing about that little human was appreciative.
"You went out with the little human the other day?" Irene asked as she observed the scenery passing by like a blur. They were heading to school. During these past two weeks, Tony and Bella had grown quite close.
"Yeah, we had a history project to finish."
Irene scoffed and rolled her eyes.
"Reenie," Tony scolded.
"I haven't said anything."
"Your scoff was enough of a statement in itself."
"If you know then why do you keep torturing yourself by hanging out with her? She has a mate, Tony. The moment he'll be back, you'll be out of the picture."
Tony's jaw was tense and his grip of the stirring wheel firmer.
"Look, I don't want to be mean," Irene said in a gentler tone. "I just don't want you to end up hurt."
"I know, Reenie. I know. But I don't understand it myself. I just... feel drawn to her for some reason. Like... I don't know, I wanna be with her and see her happy."
Irene frowned. What he described was not possible. At least, not in this case. Two vampires could not have the same mate.
"Are you sure you don't mistake it for something else?" she asked. "Maybe you're just attracted to her blood. Maybe she's just your blood singer."
Tony shook his head. "Her blood does smell good but I don't feel any thirst about it. Like, I don't particularly want to rip her jugular open for instance."
If he was not her blood, then what was it? Why were things so messy in Forks? Wasn't it supposed to be a quiet town? Yet, the moment they got here, it seemed like they kept running into problems. And it was only the beginning.
