If Irene's heart were still beating, she would have felt it sink at the simple idea Aro having a part in this, and her eyes momentarily locked with Tony's who was expressing the same worry. It was definitely in Aro's character to do something of the sort. He had already done it once. When he wants something, he would do anything to get it, not caring about who he had to kill. People were only objects to him, things he could easily discard when not needed or bothersome. Beside power, he had no care for anything else. He wanted to maintain his iron-like grip on the vampire world and act as he pleases, as long as he shall live.
"An army could solve that for him," Jasper said.
Grasping the gravity of the situation and probably out of guilt to be the reason behind this entire mess, Bella said, "We can't wait two weeks for graduation, you need to change me now- "
"You'd be a liability as a newborn," Jasper cut off. "Unable to control your instincts. An easy target."
"There's also your father to consider. And your mother," Carlisle continued. "How terrible would it be for them if you suddenly disappeared?"
"But... we're still going to kick someone's ass, right?" Emmett asked.
"That's really your only concern right now?" Irene asked in utter bewilderment.
The Cullens discussed a plan of attack with the twins. Taking down this army was a necessity, but they could not act recklessly either. Since they still had no idea who might be behind it, they might be walking into a trap. Besides, fighting in a big city like Seattle would surely attract eyes and make the existence of vampires known to the world, which was not what they wanted. The Volturi would have their heads. The best plan would be luring the army to a wasteland where they could settle their scores, but that was not an easy thing to do. Especially when the leader was clearly a step forward than the Cullens.
If Irene had not been really thrilled at the idea of being involved in this at the beginning, it was another story now. She would take on this army on her own if she had to, as long as the Volturi do not come to the United States. She would never have expected such events to unfold upon her arrival in Forks. This little town seemed so... quiet and calm. But then again, it was often in these kinds of places that unimaginable things happened.
Irene eventually left the living room. She had sensed Rosalie's scent moving and going to the garage. The blonde vampire had left for her room the moment Bella's scent entered her sensory perimeter and it seemed she had grown bored of whatever she was doing upstairs. When Irene walked into the garage, Rosalie, her hair tied into a high ponytail and a wrench in hand, was working on her car. All of the Cullens had knowledge in mechanics, but Rosalie was apparently the most skilled one according to Edward. She had several degrees in mechanical engineering but never got a job due to her young appearance. So all she could do was work on the vehicles she owned.
"Avoiding's Bella's presence?" Irene asked as she walked in.
Rosalie did not look up as she replied, "I don't enjoy arguing, unlike most people would think." She removed a piece then screw another one in. "Seems like it got better between the two of you."
Irene sat on the counter beside the latest Vogue issue, probably Alice's. "Yeah, I'm learning to... take a step back. Tony loves her and she does seem to love him back so that's what matters."
"What about the wolf?"
Irene shrugged as she took the magazine and began to skim it. "Tony says he can handle it. So I won't meddle. It's none of my business anyway. Never was to begin with."
Irene was well aware that she had a tendency to cross boundaries and let her overprotectiveness talk. It had been especially the case lately. For the last forty years, Tony had been her only friend and support. Her only pillar. Trust was not something she easily gave as, after what happened to the Argences, she could not afford to give it to the wrong person. She had never realized how difficult it had become for her to befriend anyone for she had mistrusted the entire world for so long.
