"Come on George, you have to go to the concert." Nick had been trying to convince George to go to their friend Clay's concert for weeks. George didn't really want to go because it made his girlfriend uncomfortable that he would do anything that Clay asked him to do. She had yelled at George the last time he went to one of Clay's concerts. Maxine, his girlfriend, suspected that Clay had a crush on George. Obviously, George thought that was crazy, but Nick kind of thought she had a point.
"Nick, you know what happened last time, I don't want to make Max mad." George knew Nick wouldn't stop asking, and he really did want to go. However, he didn't think he could take Maxine yelling at him again.
"Just don't tell her George, she doesn't have to know where you are at all times." Like that would actually work. Well, if he actually thinks about it, that could work. All he would have to do is not tell her. Easy enough, it's not lying it's just withholding the truth. Very different. "Okay," he agreed. Nick cheered knowing that his tactics had actually worked.
They both got ready as quickly as they could because they didn't have a whole lot of time left. His pondering had taken away a large portion of their time. Once they finished getting ready, they hopped in Nick's Tesla to make sure they got there quickly (George still wasn't very good at driving so taking his car wasn't a good idea).
Once they arrived at the bar Clay was singing at, they immediately got drinks. A lot of drinks. Nick mentioned something about not wanting to have to get up to get more once the performances started.
George drank all of his drinks pretty quickly during the first few performances that happened before his best friend's. He remembers hearing some announcement about the next singer preparing to go up. He thinks he remembers hearing Clay's name.
A few minutes later George watched Clay go up on stage with his guitar and prepare to sing his song. At this point, George felt pretty drunk. He hadn't even realized he drank that much. He would definitely have to yell at Nick later for letting him get drunk, since Nick knows how he gets when he's drunk.
George decided to check his phone while Clay was getting ready to perform. He saw several missed calls and texts from Maxine. He had turned his location off at some point, hoping she wouldn't figure out where he was.
Once Clay was ready, he started singing his new song that he had wrote, the one that Nick swore George had to hear.
I heard she got you a penthouse
On the Westside
When will she learn
That you're afraid of heights
George was liking the song so far. He thought Clay's voice sounded really good, better than usual even.
I heard she got you a new Benz
With the white wheels
When will she learn
That you like to tandem bike
Okay, that has to be a crazy coincidence. George remembers a few years ago when he told Clay that they should go tandem biking sometime because he loves it.
And I hate that
I could love you with my eyes closed
Kiss you with a blindfold
Figure you out
I might hold you with my hands tied
Show you I'm the right guy
To figure you out
Na na na na na
Oh wow, this is a love song, George has never heard Clay sing a love song before. Who could it be about? Did Clay start dating someone and not tell him?
I heard she got you some new friends
With some big dreams
When will she learn
That you already got your own
Oh, I heard she got you the front row
At the rap show
When will she learn
That you like the Rolling Stones
This person sounds perfect for Clay, they seem like they like a lot of the same things as George. No wonder Clay is dating someone that's just like his best friend.
And I've been thinkin'
Of all the little things that you've been missing
When will you learn?
I could love you with my eyes closed
Kiss you with a blindfold
Figure you out
I might hold you with my hands tied
Show you I'm the right guy
To figure you out
This song was really romantic, this person is really lucky to be with someone as amazing as Clay.
I could treat you so much better
I've known you forever
Figured you out
Wait, this song wasn't about someone he's already with, it's about someone he wants to be with. Was this about George? I mean, it would kind of make sense, wouldn't it?
I could love you with my eyes closed
Kiss you with a blindfold
Figure you out
I might hold you with my hands tied
Show you I'm' the right guy
To figure you out
Na na na na na
George didn't know what to think anymore. Was the song about him? Maybe he was just that drunk? Was this why Nick said George had to hear the song? It had to be. Maybe Maxine was right. What was he supposed to do now?
Oh no, Clay was walking over to him. He had better figure out what he's going to say. "Hey guys, what did you think?" George was suddenly mesmerized by Clay's appearance. Has he always been this attractive?
"It was incredible. I mean, really, I've never heard anything that amazing before." George looked just as dumbfounded as he sounded. Clay looked into George's eyes when he said that, and it was like two stars had finally noticed each other existed.
Oh wow, this really changes things. But what about Maxine? These were George's first thoughts after this performance (besides how good Clay looked of course).
One more look at his best friend confirmed that he would never feel this way about Maxine.
It also told him he was royally screwed. Literally.
