Summary:
The investigation continues and Wednesday is definitely NOT a softie. She's not!

Wednesday doesn't experiment any more with her new abilities. If the last time had have been less traumatic for her and Enid, she might have used them again but she hasn't. She hasn't needed to, really. Though, she does finally find a lead for the missing Christmas tree.

She's strolling to class one day when she spots it. There are pine needles littering the ground and even some left over tinsel and a bauble that's rolled and landed behind a stiff statue. Wednesday forgets about class, following the leads. They take her to the common room on the left wing of Nevermore.

She stands at the door, thinking. She pulls a nail file from her bag and starts to jimmy the lock. It can't be this easy? She ponders. Inside the common room, it's empty. Most students are in class by now. She searches around the room and finds nothing of interest. Definitely not a tree. Only some tangled wool someone dropped on the floor. She pokes it with the toe of her shoe with a scoff.

It's oddly suspicious that she, after a week of searching, would find such a clear trail. That means someone is trying to throw her off by setting out these 'clues', For a long moment she stands, surveying the room. Who would have the motive to steal a tree? Furthermore, who'd be able to get into their common room to take it when it had been occupied most of the night?

Therefore, the person who stole the tree would have to be among the people in their common room. Wednesday smiles. That narrows it down to either: Ajax, Bianca, Eugene, Enid, Yoko, Xavier or herself.

With this knowledge, Wednesday finds herself for the first time joining the others in the common room. They are sitting around doing their own thing and don't pay her much attention when she arrives. Well, except Enid who waves enthusiastically.

Yoko and Bianca are studying from flash cards, Eugene reads a book on bees while Xavier draws them. Ajax sits with Enid, his arm draped over the seat so it's behind her. He's relaxed, Wednesday notices that she isn't.

"Wednesday, have you found out anything more about the missing tree?" Eugene asks, peeking up from his book with a hopeful smile. Wednesday decides not to let on with what she knows. If they know she's onto them, they may try to make more faux clues.

"No," Wednesday says, surveying the room. None of them seems suspicious in the slightest. That means she'll have to take a new technique to narrow down the suspects further: engage in dreaded small talk, "So...What time did you guys leave the common room on the night the tree was stolen?"

Too forward? Maybe but none of them question her, they answer willingly.

"Bianca and I were the first to leave because we needed to study," Yoko explains, holding up the flashcards. Bianca nods. Wednesday notes they don't seem to have any tells, they're telling the truth. Eugene speaks next.

"I got tired and went to bed," He says. Wednesday doesn't think Eugene, of all people, would steal the tree but, then again, you never know. Even so, he seems relaxed, turning a page of his book.

"That left me with the two lovebirds here," Xavier points an accusing thumb towards Ajax and Enid, "I wasn't sticking around so I also hit the hay."

"We weren't far behind, obviously," Enid agrees with a blush. Ajax stares down at her and she shuffles just slightly. Wednesday's face hardens. Why does she feel the need to save her suddenly? Or, even better, find a way to get rid of Ajax for good. She wouldn't be surprised if he stole the tree. He was one of the last to leave and his motive...perhaps Enids attention? Wednesday could almost smile. Suspect acquired.
