Chapter 8: The First Case of Mismatching

Start from the beginning

"What did you do to me?!" Jacob bellowed.

Immediately, Tony grabbed Jacob's hand and collar, freeing Irene, as his eyes glared with pure anger and fury. "If you ever touch my sister again, I'll swear I'll rip you to shreds."

"Stop!" Bella stepped in.

A few feet behind them, Edward had sped to Irene and gently took her face in between his hands. At the moment, she looked so vulnerable, so unprotected, which was not a sight he was used to. Irene was always presenting herself with strength and confidence, even intimidation. But before him, Edward was only seeing a frightened girl. He hated this sight of her. He hated seeing so weakened.

"Are you okay?" He softly asked.

Irene closed her eyes and snuggled her face more into his palm. Edward's touch was soothing her, calming the raging storm in her head. It was a simple gesture, yet it brought her serenity and comfort. She wished for more, she wished for his arms to wrap around her, but also knew that she could not ask for such a thing. So she only enjoyed the softness of his palm.

"I'm tired of this. From now on I'm Switzerland, okay?" Bella exclaimed after standing in-between Tony and Jacob who were still glaring at each other.

Tony was clearly not having it and was gathering all his entire self-control not to attack Jacob. Seeing that, Irene said, "Brother, it's alright. I'm fine." Tony's jaw was still clenched, a sign that he was still mad. Still, he took a step back. Irene then turned to Jacob. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to use my gift on you. I... temporarily lost control of it."

Glancing at her, Jacob noticed that Irene's eyes were not as cold as they usually were. In fact, she looked somewhat tired, which did indicate to him that she was sincere. So he let out a sigh and took a step back.

"I don't expect you guys to chuck a football around together," Bella then told them. Seeing that none of them budge, she sighed too. "Fine. But we have a lot of problems. And this is one temporary solution. Are you willing to at least try?"

Tony and Jacob shared a look then gazed back at Bella. Not so far, Edward remained by Irene's side, her hand in his. He did not feel like leaving her. He wanted to make sure that she was truly alright.

"Alright, so you need to coordinate. You know, schedules and stuff." Neither Tony nor Jacob said anything. Bella sighed for the nth time. "Would the pack prefer days or nights?" She asked Jacob.

"Nights."

"Will days work for you?" She then turned to Tony who nodded, then to Edward who nodded as well. "Good. See? How hard was that?"

They were not best friends, but it was an improvement. After the conversation, Jacob left for the reservation to inform the rest of his pack on the decision that had been made. Irene returned home as Tony remained with Bella. As for Edward, he returned to the Cullen residence. It had not gone unnoticed by him how Tony became close to Bella to the point of often being around her and getting mad at Jacob. Strangely enough, it did not bother him at all. And it made him question everything that he ever believed in. He knew that something was wrong with his feelings. If Bella was his mate, why was he more concerned by Irene? Why was he yearning for Irene? Something was not right. Or perhaps, he had been mistaken from day one?

In this confused and lost state, Edward went to the person that had always provided him guidance.

"Carlisle," Edward called.

The blond doctor smiled. "Edward, you're alright back." The whole family was gathered in the living room. Rosalie was in Emmett's arms. Across from them was Alice reading a fashion magazine on Jasper's lap. At the kitchen counter was sitting Carlisle, analyzing a few patients' files with Esme by his side, who was on her laptop. "Did you find anything about the intruder?"
