"I would've seen her deciding."
"It has to be the Volturi," Edward then said, and Irene felt a cold chill running down her spine at the mention of the Italian vampires. Unconsciously, she grabbed the pendant of her necklace as horrible memories filled her mind.
"I don't think it's the Volturi either," Alice shook her head again. "I've been watching Aro's decisions too."
"So we keep looking," Emmett said.
"We also take shifts," Carlisle ordered. "Guarding Bella's house."
"Another protection detail?" From the way Rosalie's voice sounded, she seemed incredibly annoyed by the new task. Irene had noticed that the blonde vampire was not very fond of Bella, unlike the rest of her family. Rosalie was quite done with all of this mess, which made her feel like protecting Bella was the only thing she had been doing for two years now.
"Rosalie," Esme warned, not wanting another argument to explode. Especially not in a grave moment like that. Rosalie only sighed and stopped herself from rolling her eyes.
"We'll help too," Tony then told Carlisle.
"We?" Irene repeated and much like Rosalie, she was not pleased by the idea.
Tony turned to her. "We agreed to help them."
"No. We agreed to help them kill Victoria," Irene specified. "Being Bella's babysitter wasn't part of the deal."
"But if it makes too much noise, our cover is blown."
Irene thought about it for a second and eventually sighed and rolled her eyes. "Alright, I'll do it."
"No, they're right," Bella agreed with both Rosalie and Irene. "You can't protect me, watch my dad... and search for the intruder."
"And for Victoria," Rosalie added.
"And keep yourselves fed."
"We're not leaving you defenceless," Tony shook his head, refusing to leave Bella alone to deal with an unknown vampire.
"Well, I'm not gonna let you starve," she shot back. "And I wouldn't be unprotected, I have..."
Bella did not finish her sentence as he voice trailed off. Her eyes moved to Tony then looked down. She looked uncomfortable, embarrassed even. That was when Irene understood her intentions. A dry chuckle left her lips. "She wants to involve Jacob," she informed. Tony and the Cullens' reactions were immediate, faces of disgust and groans of annoyance. The simple idea of teaming up with their natural enemies mentally made them gag.
Tony lifted an eyebrow. "The wolves?"
"It'd mean more protection," Carlisle reasoned. "It'd also mean more people to recognize the intruder if they ever come back. And it'd allow us to hunt."
"I'll call Jacob over tomorrow morning," Bella said.
The group was about to disperse when Irene uttered words which did surprise everyone, especially Tony and Bella. "May... Tony and I come over too?" All eyes were on her, wondering if they had heard right. Seeing that, Irene explained, "If the intruder's scent still remains in her room, I can attempt to track them. But I must specify that my tracking skills are nowhere near those with tracking gifts."
Carlisle smiled. "But it's worth the shot. Any information on the intruder is welcomed."
It had been decided that the pack and the vampires would take turns at guarding Bella's house so the vampires could go hunt and protect Charlie from afar. The Swan residence would be guarded twenty-four seven. Irene did not particularly mind the collection (just the fact of protecting Bella when she was not close to her at all), but she knew that all were not on the same page at her. The pack hated vampires and the Cullens, most of them at least, were not fond of shifters at all. There was a risk of conflict and a fight if they would not put their pride aside, especially Tony and Jacob.
Back at home, Irene was about to return to her night occupation, reading or translating books, when Tony stopped her, "Hey, can we talk?" he asked.
Irene sighed, already knowing the topic that would be brought. "Let me guess, it's about the little human."
"Bella," Tony corrected. "Her name's Bella."
"Oh, I know. I just don't care."
Tony sighed. "Reenie, can you stop being so... hostile to her? At least until the time the intruder problem is handled. "
"Why? What is she to me? I'm already doing this bloody protection thing for you, so please, don't ask me to raise pigs with her."
"Reenie..."
"She used you! And I should overlook this?"
"We've already talked about this."
"Then let's talk about it again!" Irene exclaimed. "Do you realize how crazy this sounds?! Mitchmatching never occurred before! And if she was Edward's bloodsinger, he'd be thirsting for her blood which is not the case!"
"He may have a good self-control. I mean, Carlisle literally exists!"
"You're being delusional."
"Or maybe you are! Bella is-"
"A two-faced maggot! She's dating Edward, had a fling with Jacob, then got close to you while still having Jacob around! Can't you see that? Don't think she likes you because she doesn't! She only took interest in you because you reminded her of her ex! Not for who you are!"
Tony remained silent for a moment. His jaw was clenched and his hands fisted. "Are you done?" His voice was cold, a detail that did not go unnoticed to Irene. Guilt quickly filled Irene's dead heart. "You know, you could just be happy that I like someone."
"Tony, that's not-"
"I'll be out for a bit."
And before she could utter anything, he used his enhanced abilities to leave the house. Irene let out a heavy sigh as she let her body fall onto the couch. She didn't mean to hurt her brother, yet it seemed it was the only thing she could do. And she hated herself for that.
