"But she doesn't like him like that," Tony defended.
Irene scoffed. "Are you sure? Because to me, it looks like she does like him like that. Stop chasing someone who doesn't respect you. You deserve better than that."
"I can't help it, Irene. You don't choose who you love."
Irene froze and her eyes went wide. She slammed her book shut and fully faced her brother. "Love?" She repeated, both bewildered and stressed.
"It's not what I-"
"She's mated, Anthony! You cannot love her!"
"Well, maybe she's not."
Irene looked at him, a little confused. Tony continued, "You believe Bella's my bloodsinger. But what if she's Edward's? What if they've mistaken the bloodsinging bond with the soulmate one? What if Edward and Bella never were mates?"
Irene remained silent for a second. Her throat was tight. Her shoulders felt heavy. Her stomach was contracted. She felt her dead heart beating fast with anxiety. What Tony said might be true. It was rare, but it was possible. However, Irene could not accept it. She refused to accept it. Because if Bella truly was Tony's mate, it meant that Edward might be hers. It meant that the feeling of tranquillity and peace she felt whenever the Cullen boy was around her was deeper than it was. And it frightened her.
She shook her head. "That's... that's not possible."
"Why can't it be? I mean to her! She means to me! There's something between her and me, I'm not mad-"
"IT CANNOT BE!"
Tony fell silent. His eyebrow knitted in confusion as he finally noticed the panic on his little sister's face. The sheer fright and concern in her eyes. Something was troubling her, and it was not Bella. His relationship with Bella was not the reason she felt so anxious about. It was something related to it. And the only thing, the only other person related to the situation was Edward. And it all appeared clearer to Tony. His eyes therefore soften. He knew his sister. And he knew that the thing that frightened her the most was letting someone in, and possibly hurting them even though she was not at fault.
"Irene, is there something you want to tell me?" Irene remained silent. Throat tight, she looked away. "Reenie, you know you can talk to me, right?"
Clenching then unclenching her jaw, a sign of her inner trouble, Irene eventually regained her composure and faced her brother, "There's nothing wrong, brother."
Not letting him time to answer anything, Irene used her enhanced abilities to return to her room. She browsed through her collection of books on legends and myths but found no mention of mismatching or soulmate bond breaking. She spent the entire day searching, even used the internet to do so, but nothing was found. It was surely a sign that mismatching was not possible. But then again, not everything was findable on the internet and she did not possess all books in the world. So perhaps, it was possible.
But then, it would mean that her appreciation of Edward was more than simply appreciation. It did make sense to her. The way she loved hearing his voice, the way it was soothing her, the way his presence made her feel at ease, at peace like a remedy, the way she felt comfortable around him, the way he reminded her of her favourite days; cold winter days when she used, as a child, to snuggle in a warm blanket with a hot cup of chocolate milk in the hands, the way he provided her with the very thing she had been yearning for years, solace.
But this very thing was not open to her. She did not deserve it. She could not love him or she would put him in danger. If it ever gets known, the Volturi would come for him, they would use him to get her just like they had used the Argence coven. She did not want history to repeat itself again. She did not want to be the cause of a massacre again. She did not want to cause anyone else pain and suffering. She did not want to bring anymore despair to innocent people. She had caused enough harm. She had caused enough destruction. She had caused enough chaos. It was all her fault. They died because of her. Everything that happened to them, to Tony, it was all on her, all on her conscience. She did not want it to happen again. Not again. Not twice. No more pain. No more fear. No more -
