L smirked and flickered her gaze up at him briefly, "I thought you were smart and knew everything?" She knew this wasn't the time to antagonise him though and continued quickly.

"These are the police officers who always come and find me when I run away, although I guess you're not just ordinary police officers, are you?" L asked as she turned to look back at the two figures who she had known nearly her whole life.

Their faces were as familiar to her as her own, as were their police uniforms.

The female officer smiled gently and shook her head. "No, we're not ordinary police officers or humans at all. It's time for you to know the truth, L. We are a spell, a very complex duplicate spell created by your parents to protect and look after you whenever you most need it. We can detect when you are in real danger, and can show up in just the right spot. The spell has almost run its course now, however... this was our one last protection detail before we expire."

L's mouth fell open again; whatever she had been expecting, it wasn't that.

She shook her head at them both, "You can't be a spell, you're too animated, you talk back no matter what I say and you always help me, you just fought that monster for crying out loud!"

The male officer laughed quietly, though somehow she knew it wasn't at her.

"We were imbued with some of the strongest magic your parents knew, just in case something this bad should ever happen to you. Now that you have unlocked your abilities and have found out about this world, their world, and now yours, you don't need us anymore. You must learn to fight, learn to defend yourself, and believe in who you really are."

L felt a lump forming in her throat when something struck her. "When you said, 'magic my parents knew', are you trying to say they're... dead?"

The female officer looked solemn. She seemed sadder than L could ever remember her being.

"We don't know. We were only given certain knowledge and speech abilities to be able to talk to you. I know your life hasn't been easy, and it's not getting much better, but you do have people you can trust and rely on now. The spell would not expire otherwise."

L shook her head harder. She didn't want it to happen. "Why does it have to expire at all?! Why can't you just stick around this time?!"

"Because this spell wasn't meant to last forever, you don't need us now, L. Just remember, sometimes running away is the answer, and sometimes you have to stand your ground."

L didn't want them to expire. They had been the only constant part of her life, and to never see them again just felt... wrong. The female officer moved forward and kneeled down in front of L. She was smiling sadly as she leaned in closer to whisper to L.

"Ask Vadim to show you a photo of your parents. He doesn't know he has it, but once you request it, he will. You need to see it before you do anything else. It may make all of this a little easier on you. Good luck with everything, L."

To L's surprise, the woman kissed her cheek before standing up again. She rejoined the man, and they both stepped back away from the group.

The male officer gestured to them all with one arm, "Look after yourselves and especially L, she is incredibly stubborn, but no matter how much she argues, she is important."

L's mouth fell open, and a chill ran through her entire body. She made to run to the two figures, but they disappeared before her eyes. She screamed and screamed for them to come back but there was no answer. Someone touched her shoulder gently but she ignored them while her mind reeled. It couldn't be true. It just couldn't. She wasn't willing to believe it.
