Topic: Soul Fragment

Poem Name: Heartache

Word Count: 466

I know what I have done.

I understand why I am here,

Why I am nothing but a fraction of who I was,

A simple fragment.

I was once a happy, fulfilled person.

With hopes, dreams, love, and cheer.

I was content, then the peace gave pause.

Those feelings and illusions of peace became distant.

There were no more shooting stars,

Only airplanes soaring through the night sky.

Gone were the foods given in jars,

As prices inflated, making it nearly impossible to buy.

Thankfully, I was able to leave,

Able to flee to another place.

A place with a river instead of a sea.

Somewhere that in some ways, is the same, but is vastly different.

The food doesn't taste quite the same, there's just a small something they can't achieve.

The people have all kinds of misconceptions and thoughts about my case.

Yet it isn't as simple as what they see.

There's a broken soul behind the face I show, conflicted feelings behind the mask I present.

Being so far away from my roots,

Losing the language, culture, and identity,

Is a pain that never fully dilutes.

It can numb, and make you lose some of your serenity.

Watching my people - if I can even call them that - suffer,

While sitting half a world away.

Yearning for that feeling of home,

Yet not knowing where it is.

It certainly isn't the place I left for another,

But it doesn't feel like the one where I spend my day.

It isn't where my family came from,

Nor is it where my passport says.

So many people go through the same,

Moving all over, for various reasons.

It's simply a rule of the world's game.

Leave if things go bad, if there are dangerous seasons.

Yet there will always be that heartache,

No matter how much you assimilate.

And next to nothing people can do,

But watch and listen.

Starting a new life elsewhere is an incredible thing in which to partake,

No matter the reason - a whim, an aspiration, the climate.

There are so many who have done it, too.

Who have had their hearts torn in many a direction.

Please, don't overthink it.

In truth, it's quite simple.

Where you are and where you've been, together it will all fit.

Don't make a wave out of a ripple

Don't be like me, pulling on every thread.

Just take a breath,

Step back,

And think of where your heart is.

Don't fill yourself with dread,

And cause your soul's death.

Cut yourself some slack,

You can find some bliss.

I know you can't see me,

But I'll try to show you all the same.

You cannot hear my plea,

Yet I beg that you don't rip your soul over a few borders and a name.
