These past few days I have been off Black, and I have gotten closer than we were ever before. Yes, he is my best friend but due to my busy schedule, we never have time to hang out and just bond like most friends do. Black is not an orphan like me, he was just kicked out of the house by his parents because of his constant hookups and not having a job. He is now twenty-five. His parents couldn't have him sleeping around without being able to fend for himself but they visit him from time to time. I know that if things go sideways, they will have my back but I don't want to depend on them too much.
Whilst wondering we end up at a carnival. It is very sunny, and people seem to be having a lot of fun. I am not fun of crowded places but this time I take a risk. We are refreshing after all. As we are walking, a glistening sign that says ' fortune telling, come and see your future' attracts our attention. No one can miss it even if they want to because of its shine. Black shrieks like a baby seen a booth filled with candy. Sometimes it feels like I'm the older one between the two of us. I just shake my head at his behavior.
"You must be insane; Black I don't like fortune tellers. They tell lies?" I say with a serious poker face.
"Are you kidding me, these people are awesome. Once I was told by a fortune teller that in a month I would be happy and the following month I aced my exams. See amazing" he screeches the amazing part completely oblivious to his childish attitude.
"Well, a lady was once told by these people that her husband was going to buy her a car and you know what happened?" I ask slowing my pace down.
His brows furrow in confusion "What?"
"Her husband divorced her and married another wife that is with whom he bought a car. Imagine how soul-crushing it was for the former wife. Do you know she had to move and live with her family at their farmhouse in the countryside, imagine that?" I dramatically retort flipping my hair over my shoulder.
" Well, that is unfortunate but we are still going" he bites his lower lip pretending to ponder something before dragging me to the booth.
I try one more time to convince him that it is a complete waste of time, "Do you know that lady could be you, imagine being told that you will be a president and then the only title you achieve in your life is being the head of the family? If you get lucky"
"You are ridiculous, not going to change my mind though"
We arrive at the booth joining the line. I didn't know that many people pay to be told nonsense by these money-sucking machines. Ah, I despise them so much. Something draws my attention. A little girl playing at the side of the booth is what captures my attention. She is dressed in a blue primeval dress; her hair falls effortlessly on her shoulders. It is silver-gray sparkling at every move as the sun reflects on it. Two braided hair is tied at the back of her head and there is a flower on the knot. I guess she senses my gaze because suddenly she stops playing and looks at me. She is beautiful. She points at the booth mouthing something but I cannot comprehend what she is saying. By the look on her face, she is concerned.
I nudge Black with my elbow, '' what!'' he replies annoyed. He hates it when I do that but I am too focused on the girl to care.
''Do you see that girl?'' I ask my gaze still on the girl, Black turns looking where I am pointing. The moment the girl's eyes set on Black; they bulge with fear. She gazes at me and then at Black terrified before running behind the booth. Without thinking, I follow her but when I reach the back of the booth, she is nowhere to be found.
''Shey! What are you doing? Come back.'' Black shouts frustrated. I give one more glance in the direction she went before going back to the line, ''what were you looking for?''
