AFTER RECEIVING CLINT'S note, Maya arrived at the location of a car dealership somewhere in the back streets of New York. It had been the same location where her father was killed by Ronin. The last moments and words she shared with him were full of sorrow as she had witnessed the death of the man. A cruel game that Clint was willing to play with the woman to state whatever he was trying to state.

But he had known that she would bring it back up. Why wouldn't she? So, he had tasked Jason with disposing of said backup slowly moving between the cars stuck in the snow. Eyes warily glancing between each space between the cars. Guns and bats are tight in their grasp as they awaited anxiously the arrival of Ronin.

Jason didn't hesitate to pick them off one by one. Combat gloves began to slowly be speckled in red by each Tracksuit he came across. Until he finally saw Ivan who was glancing around when hearing the sound of weapons beginning to drop.

Ivan had no time to react when Jason came jumping over the hood of a vehicle and kicking him. And soon enough, he was beaten down with Jason's boots beginning to hit his head in vicious stomps. Grunting in fury as he grounded the bottom of his combat boot in the Russian's face. Grinding it across the man's jaw and seeing the blood that was speckled across his face, barely able to recognize him. Feature's dishevelled and likely needing surgery to be kept.

His body trembled, fists shaking by his sides. Turning his gaze, he saw Maya standing cluelessly. Unaware of the danger she was in. With a heavy puff and slaps to the side of his mask, Jason marched in her direction.

"Maya!" His voice boomed through the winter air. When no response was given, he slammed his fists on the hood of a vehicle and sprinted at her. She turned just in time to see him.

Pulling her pistol from the back of her pants, she shot him in the chest as he picked her up by the throat, twisting her wrist, he caused her to drop the gun. Seeing him merely shrug the bullets off, she wrapped her legs around his arm and used her weight to flip him over and land on his back. Twisting and pulling on the limb ruthlessly.

But even when she felt the vibration of his arm pop out of place, surely taking him out of commission to get the upper hand, she was surprised when he sat up, hovering over her and punching her where he could. And no matter the number of times she kicked him in the face, he didn't relent. And when he found no success in knocking her grip free, he did the only thing he thought he could do. He lifted her.

If Maya was capable of voicing her surprise, she would. But by the time she realized what he was doing, she was gasping for air. Her mind conflicted with the decision she had to make but each time her body was slammed into the concrete, slowly breaking her resolve. Only knowing that the man in front of her wasn't normal. He was something else.

And Jason sure felt like it. His mind was muddied in the jumbling thoughts of anger. Already thinking of the torture he would subject the woman laid out in front of him. All of it became so appealing at this point in time.

Jason was pulled away, stumbling back the faint ache of his shoulder pounding through his body. He could barely feel anything, only the flared emotions that made it hard to think. Clint, standing in the Ronin suit, pointed at him. "This is not your fight!"

Grasping his bicep, Jason rolled his shoulder back and popped his shoulder into place, grunting. "What the fuck do you mean?" He panted, walking toward him, pointing at Maya's coughing figure lying in the snow. "This bitch is in some way connected to Ryan. All of this shit is connected but the spearhead is still hidden! Torturing her is the only way we get one step closer to the person involved."

"That is not the point of us being here!" Clint reprimanded. "This is to send her a message, not kill her."

"That's your point." He lowered his gaze to Maya, seeing her glaring at him. "But mine is to get answers."

Just as he was about to march at the woman, Clint placed the tip of the blade on his chest. "This isn't your fight, Jace."

Growling, Jason parried the blade, but it was a millisecond later that a gunshot echoed out and he felt his head jolt back. And for the first time in so long, the world went quiet. His mind was clear of any thoughts or emotions that blinded him. Everything was empty. And when his body hit the concrete, his eyes watched the snow drift through the night air. Pinpointing and connecting the stars with thread and thumbtacks.

He smiled.

He could see it. Almost just within his grasp. Salvation. Open hillsides and prairies that snow kissed thin blades of wheat. The sky grey with the faintest bright glow of the sun wishing to peak through the coverage. But never seemed to make it. The sour winter breeze hit his nose, making him sniffle, and freezing the inside of his nostrils. And he stood along the edge of a cliffside, overlooking the vast ocean plagued with fog. Rocks peaked out from the surface below, and something about that made it tempting to take the step forward.

"Jace!"

A siren. An alarm to his senses as he stared out at the ocean. However, his sight could only reach so far with the fog obscuring what called out to him.

"Jason, come to me!"

It came again, more softly to his mind, numbing it to smothered calmness. His eyes grew heavier with a gentle lullaby playing in his ears. And he could feel his lips widening in a brighter smile, relief. And faintly, he could see a silhouette of a figure through the fog. They were becoming more apparent each waking moment.

He reached out, taking a step forward and soon began to plummet. And he stared down at those rocks that grew closer and closer. Closing his eyes, wearing the same smile.

Until he gasped, eyes snapping open to stare up at the hazy figure of Kate.

What did he see?

"Jace!" Kate hovered above him. She found his heavy eyes staring up at her, lips ever so slightly curved in a tiny smile. But it faltered when he felt wet drops hit his cheeks. Refocusing his gaze to see tears streaming down Kate's cheeks.

"Why're you crying?" He whispered, staring up at her.

Kate sniffled, shaking her head. "I thought I lost you."

He stopped, looking around to find himself in his cave. Laid out on the couch with a thick bandage wrapped around his head securely. Yet, only worsened the pounding headache echoing through his skull. He glanced over at the coffee table and found his helmet. Almost entirely unscathed besides the sizable dent in the center of the forehead.

How long was he out?

"Clint and I weren't sure when you would wake up. So, we brought you back here where your mom could help us," Kate explained, exhaling in exasperation. "You scared the shit out of me."

"And Maya?" Jason questioned, sitting up.

"Clint sent her the message. But we shouldn't worry about that right now-"

"No," he shook his head, "I need to get answers. I need to know who-"

"Jason, we found out who was giving Joseph orders." Kate grabbed his hand, pursing her lips. "He's working with my mom-"

"Name?" Jason interjected firmly, jaw clenching.

Kate sat for a moment, blinking rapidly with her gaze flickering back up to him. Swallowing the lump in her throat as she whispered,

"Wilson Fisk."
