TWENTY TWO

MAINA

"Good luck, bro" I shook hands with Dindu as he ran to the field along with twenty one other boys, each of them from either Red or Yellow House, for the football competition.

Yes, today being Thursday was the day for games. We'd been shared into four houses; Red, Yellow, Blue and Green, with T-shirts to represent our houses, for sporting competitions. Let's say, a camp Inter-House Sports competition. Right now, Dindu was among the representatives of Yellow House for the football competition, playing against Red House. My house, Green House, was going next against Blue House and I sure as hell was going to play like never before. Evan, who was in Blue House had adamantly refused to participate in any of the competitions, on the basis that he would be "sweaty and smelly", in his words. Honestly, the boy's freakish neatness amazed me.

"So, you're representing us?" Iris asked, causing me to turn and look at her. I hadn't even noticed when she'd come up beside me. Turning to look at her, I smiled at the Green T-shirt she had on underneath black dungarees. Yes, the goddess was in my house. I, on the other hand, was dressed in the Green T-shirt, and what we call ashewo shorts.

"Affirmative" I grinned broadly. "Why aren't you representing us?"

Green and Blue house females were on the volleyball court, facing off in two rounds of volleyball for the competition, and this lady was here, looking like she was going for a shoot and not a sporting competition. As a matter of fact, I wondered why she wasn't on the court along with the others.

"In what? Oh, volleyball?" She chuckled, shaking her head. "I can't do a single sport to save my life"

I laughed at her choice of words. Imagine who I'm doing competition with.

"But you can run now, bah?" I asked her and she quirked an eyebrow at me, chuckling softly. I instantly took that as a solid no, or maybe she didn't want to run today. Either way, it was all good. "Okay. Understood" I laughed, and she did too.

Standing there in a comfortable silence, I looked around, watching the football match, when suddenly, the girl who'd been avoiding me since yesterday caught my eye. She stood at the side of the field in a Red shirt and grey sport shorts, excitedly cheering her team on, and stealing attention to herself. As usual.

Maia.

I was a bit worried at the sight of what she was putting on, but I decided to let the matter rest, at least until she'd forgiven me.

"Excuse me please," I said to Iris, walking past her to meet my sister who had been acting like I was non-existent since last night.
