"Mom?" Derek walked into the living room

"Derek, how's Meredith doing?" Carolyn asked concerned

That morning Meredith had woken up feeling not well at all. She could barely stand up and couldn't even drink water without having to throw up

"She's not very well" Derek sighed. He hated that he had to ask someone of his family and he knew Meredith hated it as well, it made her feel very depended

"Of course, dear. What time should you be back?" Carolyn asked

"I hope to be back in about six hours" Derek nodded, being grateful for buying another house close to the hospital and close to their family. Of course they still had the dreamhouse where they spend all their vacations but this was just much more practical in their daily life

"It's okay. Your father will be here in a bit as well, he's getting some breakfast first" Carolyn rubbed her son's back

"I'm gonna say goodbye to Mer now, will you- Just- Check on her please?" Derek frowned

"Of course, Derek" Carolyn nodded her head "And we'll explain to the girls when they're awake" Carolyn nodded

"Can you remind Emma to take her anxiety meds? She'll need them, her anxiety has been a big thing lately" Derek started to worry

"Derek, I will" Carolyn promised "Now go to Meredith and go to work" She softly smiled and watched him jog to his bedroom

"Mer? Are you awake?" Derek asked as he walked into Meredith's room

"Hmm.. Yeah" She nodded her head

"Mom's here. Dad's on his way and the girls are still asleep. How are you feeling?" Derek sat down on the bed, stroking his hand through her long hair

Her hair has gotten so thin the past years with some uncontrolled curls

Meredith didn't reply. She just shook her head

"Oh Mer.." Derek sighed "Maybe I should just ask if Amy can do that surgery" He sighed

"No." Meredith breathed "You are prepared"

"I'll be back as soon as I can" He promised "And ask dad to help you, okay?" He cupped her cheek in his hand

"Yeah" Meredith breathed

"I love you. Just rest and sleep, don't worry about anything else" Derek kissed her lips

"Careful" She muttered as she fell asleep again

"Of course honey" Derek kissed her head and left the room

...

"Mom?" Emma called out as she walked into the living room and then saw her grandmother walking in the room

"Hi Em. Mom isn't feeling very well so she's asleep now, your dad will be home in a couple of hours" Carolyn hugged the girl

"I-Is mom okay?" Emma's eyes widened

"Of course, Em" Carolyn rubbed Emma's back

"Are you sure? Can I see her?" Emma whimpered

"Wait a bit, honey. Poppa's getting us breakfast. He drove to get dunkin donuts" Carolyn winked, knowing the girls loved it

"Can I just quickly check on mom, please?" Emma was fidgeting with her fingers

"Of course" Carolyn softly smiled and watched the girl take off

Emma stayed away for a while. In the meantime, Christopher had arrived and they placed everything on the table. Carolyn walked to Meredith's room and saw Emma laying down while watching her mom, holding Meredith's hand in her own

"Hi Em, breakfast has arrived" She smiled softly

Emma nodded and stood up, taking one last look at her mother before walking to the kitchen and sitting down to sip her drink and eat a donut

"Are you enjoying breakfast?" Christopher asked the teenager, he noticed she was pretty quiet

"Yeah. Thanks" She popped a smile and then Ava walked inside

"Hi dear" Carolyn smiled

"Hi Nana, hi Poppa" She went over to them to say hi "Where's Mom?" She frowned

"Mom isn't feeling very well, she'll be better in a bit" Christopher assured her

"Em, don't forget to take these" Carolyn handed her the pills she had to take to help with her anxiety

"Thanks Nana" She nodded "Can I go?" Emma asked as she took her pills and finished her breakfast

"Of course. I'll be up in a bit to check on your mom as well" Carolyn nodded, knowing the girl just wanted to get to her mom

Emma walked towards her mother's bedroom and climbed in with her

"Emmie?" Meredith groaned

"Yeah. It's me" She nodded her head softly against her mother's chest

"I love you" Meredith whispered

"Hi. You're awake" Carolyn smiled as she saw Meredith and Emma curled up in the bed

"Yeah" Meredith nodded

"Do you need to get up to use the bathroom?" Carolyn asked

"Yeah" Meredith nodded softly

"I'll go get your father" Carolyn walked out of the room to get Christopher

"Why don't you go read outside for a bit?" Meredith asked Emma, knowing the girl loved to sit on the porch and read

"Maybe later" Emma sighed

"Hi Mer. I'm here to help you up" Christopher smiled

"Dad, you don't have to do this- your back-" Meredith quietly argued

"I can help" Emma quickly said and stood up

Meredith hated this, she didn't want to let her daughter and father help her up to use the bathroom but there was no way she could stand on her feet, not after the two long days she had had

"Okay mom, yell when you're ready" Emma and Christopher walked back out of the room

It took a bit before Meredith was done. Her voice cracked as she let them know she was ready, her daughter walking in to help her up and wash her hands

"Are you doing okay now?" Christopher asked as he helped her climb in the bed

"Yeah" She panted as she was already out of breath

"Sleep" Christopher ordered and kissed his daughter's forehead, covering her and his youngest granddaughter with the blankets "Mom and I are staying here until Derek's back" He brushed a few hairs out of Meredith's face

"Thanks dad. But you and mom can go home, we'll be fine" She forced a smile on her lips

"We're not leaving. We are staying and mom will make dinner so you, Derek and the girls can all curl up on the couch." He placed one extra blanket on top of her as she was shivering slightly despite the warm pajamas and the two blankets already covering her. "And now sleep. Ava asked me to help her with her homework, I'm going to do that now"
