When my lover's asleep

There are many reasons why love works for us.

For you trace circles around your tired eyes
But draw hearts on your high school notebook.
For we need not reheat the coffee in the microwave
As you would always insist on keeping it warm.
For your favorite jacket is studded in silver stones
But you scoop cherries off my sundaes and it sparks joy.
For you would always give me the bigger marshmallows
During our families' annual Christmas Campfires.
For the playlist you had curated on my birthday
Flourishes with wonders you'd speak, sing, and savor.
For you bought me a snowglobe of New York, with
Miniatures kissing in Times Square on New Year's Eve.
For you crave anything that punctures your tongue
But make words flow through you like honey.
For your bedroom is the mind of a devotee's, and
You'd storm the heavens for my name on your skin.
For my hair always gets stuck stubbornly on my brush
No matter what silly products we buy for it, and you'd
Always comfort me, saying you don't mind the tangles.
For it was your genius idea to have our white rescue cat
As both the usher and ring bearer at our wedding.
For you've stood tall in all the battles you've picked, and
Have always been beside me when I'd have no choice.
(Seriously, though, you're like, 5'7" and I'm a puny 5'4".)

For you rest when I wake, and that's how I know
We'll be together in all love, all noise, all quiet.
