"What are you guys doing?!" Sasha and Krista fall to the ground while Ymir was able to catch herself on the door frame and was currently helping Krista up.

"Oh, we were just, uh..." Sasha tries to come up with an excuse then her eye catches on something. "Chasing my potato!" You look down and see that there was indeed a potato in between your feet, but you highly doubt that was the original reason they were so close to the door.

"And why are you in Annie and I's room?" To that, Sasha does not have an excuse and gives you a big awkward smile like she had been caught with her hand in the cookie jar, which has actually happened a time or two.

"We were spying on you and Reiner." Krista comes out with the truth. You could always rely on her for her honesty. You take a look around the hall and make sure that Reiner isn't within earshot then help Sasha up, who was still on the ground munching on her potato, and usher them into your room, closing the door behind you. By the time you were done filling them in, it was getting dark outside.

"He's so stupid." Ymir was very blunt with her opinions.

"Oh stop, it was sweet of him to ask to spend time with you." Krista, always the peacemaker.

"Yeah, and not to mention that kiss." Sasha adds and nudges your shoulder, causing your cheeks to burn.

"Okay okay, that's enough. We should get going. It's almost time for the funeral." You stand up and grab the jacket that you had discarded on the bed and pull it on.

"If you can even call it that."

"Ymir!"

"What?"

"Be more considerate of how others might be feeling, those were our friends."

"Sorry if I don't think burning all the bodies in piles, is exactly a funeral." It hurt, but she was right. You wished that there could be a better way, but considering how long some of them had been sitting there, infection was too much of a risk to the rest of you.

"It's the thought that counts. Let's go." You head out your door and the rest follow suit out of the barracks and into the square where they were just starting the fires. You say goodbye to them and find Reiner, Jean, Bertholdt, and Annie and make your way over to them. You could use a quieter crowd on such an occasion. You step in between Reiner and Jean and take in a deep breath, as much as it smelt, you needed the oxygen. You had seen a lot, and you were a tough person, but there was something about burning the bodies of the fallen that just hurt your heart. You glance over to Jean and can see how much he's hurting. The loss of Marco was definitely weighing on his mind heavily. You hesitate at first, but end up reaching for his hand and give him a reassuring squeeze. He doesn't look, he just holds on. He needed that. He probably would have lost it right then and there otherwise. He was good at keeping up his mask as the tough and confident guy, but on the inside, you knew he was hurting. You give Reiner a pat on the arm to let him know that you were there, then noticed Connie crouched down in front of you. You let go of Jean and step up to Connie and crouch down next to him, putting your arm around him. From that point on, all you remember from that night was silence except for the sound of the crackling flames, reducing your comrades to ashes.

~~~the next day~~~
"Still have your heart set on the MPs?" You ask Annie as the two of you get dressed and ready. It was finally the day you had been waiting for what felt like your whole life for, the day to pick your regiment.
"Why would anything change?" She asks as she pulls over her hoodie. 'Can't argue with her there.'
"Well, I just thought after all this quality time we've spent together you wouldn't want to leave me." You smirk at her as you loop your belt through the hoops. She gives you an unamused look and you let out a laugh. "Oh come on Annie, you know I'm your favorite." She doesn't respond as she turns to face her bed to grab her jacket, but you swear you could see a small smile playing at the corner of her lips as she did. You smirk and pull on your own jacket. "You didn't deny it, so I'm going to take it as fact."
"You never quit, do you?"
"Nope, not with you, bestie." She rolls her eyes at that and heads to the door, opening it for you. You give her a smile in return and the two of you head out of the barracks, meeting up with Reiner and Bertholdt on the way to the square.
"Morning." Reiner wraps his arm around you and kisses the top of your head.
"Good morning." You smile at the sight of him and continue to the center of the courtyard to wait. "You two ready for this?" The boys exchange a knowing look with each other then turn their attention back to you.
"Yeah, we are." You raise your brow and look between the two of them. 'Okay, what was that look about?' Before you're able to ask about the exchange, you hear your brother's voice over the crowd.
"Cadets! Fall in! Head over to the platform! Time to make your choice! Move it!" You and the rest of the recruits make your way over to the platform, not wanting to delay and risk incurring your brother's wrath. They saw him with Daz that day and they do not want to be in that situation. Your brother catches your eye and his strict military demeanor changes to a doting big brother for a second, giving you a huge smile and a big thumbs up. You let out a laugh and shoot them back at him as you head to the platform.
"You ready?"
"I was born ready."
