"Reiner and Bertholdt. Why?"
(F/N)'s eyes were wide with both terror and anger; she had stopped listening even before he confirmed her fears. Her eyes were locked on the shotgun leaning against the wall across from her; a familiar shotgun with three marks engraved into the butt - a tally for each family member lost.
Now, she knew she couldn't be the only person in the world who maybe did something like this, but with that put together with those two names, there was no way it could be a coincidence.
What would they do when they returned and found her here?
"Who are they?" She asked quietly in an attempt to seem like she wasn't panicking on the inside.
"We met them about three weeks after you left. They're really nice and helpful, Reiner especially. Bertl's more on the quiet side and he's really smart. He just doesn't give himself enough credit most of the time. He's really good at tracking and really know's his way around the forest. Reiner's really strong and is really good and fending off stiffs. I'm sure you'll get along great with them."
She could have laughed. She was sure they would bond great over the broken nose Reiner had given her.
"Where are they now? And when will they be coming back?" She tried her best to not seem too interested in the two men that had beaten and stolen from her.
"Oh they're checking out a town not too far from here. They left a few hours ago and came back to drop a few things off they found so they had more space in case they found more. They'll be back anytime now, I'm sure," Eren replied, completely clueless to the fact that they had lied to him. Sure, they found those things, just not quite the 'found' Eren thought they meant.
"Right," (F/N) forced out between a set jaw and irritated sigh. "Can't wait to meet them."
-
She couldn't wait, alright; she couldn't wait so much, that she was sitting at the table still with Sasha, Eren, and Connie when she heard voices upstairs - voices she unfortunately recognized.
Armin had retired to his own mattress and fell asleep within minutes, his mind probably at ease now that she had come back, Mikasa was cleaning out a few guns, and Marco had picked up the book Jean abandoned an hour and a half ago.
Connie grinned wolfishly at the sound of the voices as he threw a card down onto the table. "Reiner's back."
(F/N)'s fingers tightened on the cards in her hand as she listened to the hatch being opened, the volume of the two voices increasing as they came down the ladder, a dark green duffel bag being dropped to the ground first.
"Jean isn't asleep on the job, is he?" Eren called boredly without looking up, his head propped up with his hand as he contemplated his turn. (F/N) didn't know why it took so much concentration; they were playing UNO, not poker.
A loud laugh startled her, and as she looked up, Reiner stepped off the final rung, swooping down to grab the bag and sling it over his shoulder.
With the somewhat better lighting down there, (F/N) could now see the muscles on his arms and his cropped blonde hair. His amber eyes were playful as he tossed the bag into the same pile as their other 'findings.' He seemed so much nicer and joking than before. How could this Reiner and the Reiner from earlier that night be the same person?
Bertholdt appeared next, and (F/N) was almost surprised to see how tall he actually was. He was a fucking giant with gentle green eyes and dark hair. He wasn't ripped like Reiner, but (F/N) could tell he was definitely in shape and had something under that dark blue shirt of his.
