part 9: about the Zoo

Well... she certainly wasn't lying about this being a long trip...

You huffed through your nostrils, watching stars passed by your window. You could almost swear that everything was going in slow motion. You grumbled inaudibly to yourself, tapping a claw lightly atop your console with a glazed look in your eye. Couldn't we have chosen a ship that's faster??

Out of curiosity, you peek out of the corner of your eye at your Yellow companion to see how she handled this trip. Her focus was on her own window, as well as her console, as she occasionally pressed buttons on the blue screen. She seemed indifferent, but there was an occasional sigh from her, signaling her boredom as well.

You return your gaze back to the window with a subtle pout. You wished for silence from the yellow pearl beforehand, but now you realized just how bland it is without such interactions. Never thought I'd be doing this... but....

"Uhm... pearl?" Your called out, your voice much smaller than you intended it to be.

There was a moment of silence, and you were worried that she might have not heard you.

"Yes?"

You inwardly sighed with relief, swallowing a knot that had somehow formed in your throat. "Exactly is... the the Human Zoo?"

She glanced at you briefly out of the corner of her eye, showing a brief flicker of interest, before returning it to her screen. "Well, It's technically a station built to contain humans that are collected from earth." She explained, pressing a few buttons at her console.

"That's... odd." You noted with a mild wince. "It's very clear that homeworld hates anything that's earthly." You remembered the looks of disgust the homeworld dwellers had whenever earth was mentioned, especially when it involved the lifeforms that lived there. "Why keep humans?"

Yellow pearl shrugs. "It was done to appease Pink Diamond." She replied casually. "It was her who enjoyed the organic's existence for some reason."

There was a brief pause, until you finally uttered a light "Ah..." in response.

Since the time you've been here, the name "pink diamond" was tossed around a lot in homeworld. Especially by blue, who was still heavily mourning the loss. Yet, the only data you managed to gather on her was that she was somehow shattered back on earth.

Frustrating as it was, you've literally been so distracted by trying to fit in with the uptight caste system, and keep up jasper's harsh training that you barely had anytime to read into the story for more details. The story itself is scarcely discussed, only being told to new recruits to presumably fuel their passion for the empire.

Not knowing the full story wouldn't bother you...

If the name wasn't familiar to you.

The name pink diamond just made something click in your head...

"Say, (name), does the name pink diamond ring any bells for you?" Asked Yellow pearl, stealing a suspicious side-glance at you.

"...not really, no." You replied lowly.

...but they didn't need to know that.

Not yet.

"Ah, finally..."

You jerk awake from a brief power nap at the sound of a sharp huff breaking the extensive silence. "We've arrived to our destination."

Blinking sleepily as a massive, came into view on your window. You couldn't help but feel intimidated by the weapon shaped ship, as it reminded you of that of a dagger, with a large blade and a thin hilt. Beside it was another red eye ship, presumably to keep watch of whomever is willing enough to enter the weapon like establishment. Figures they'd keep humans in such an intimidating looking construct.

Why did pink ever even want a zoo made to begin with?

"Now then!" Yellow pearl chirps, snapping you out of your thoughts. "Straighten up, you'll need to look as presentable for Holly blue agate. After all, she shall be you manager for the day." You couldn't help but feel a sense of dread grow in your chest at hearing this. Not only have you never heard of this 'Holly Blue Agate' but you weren't very keen on meeting new gems, let alone one coming from what you can only assume is a massive human trophy case.

YP must has seen the look on your face, because for a split second, there was a flicker of pity for you flashing in her eyes. "You don't have to worry, (name)." She suddenly assures, prompting you to give her look over at her, mildy surprised by her sudden comfort. She pointedly avoided your gaze, as she focused her attention on the window in front of her. "Just keep up your good behavior, and you'll be fine."

You you tipped your head to the side slightly, but nodded. It's not like I have a choice in this matter... With a soft hum of resolve, you got up from your seat and shook yourself off, straightening your harness and fixing up your mane to the best of your abilities.

After entering a large diamond shaped door, you're brought into a spacious pink ship hanger where you parked alongside many other red eyes. With a gesture from Yellow pearl, you followed her out of the ship, taking a brief moment to look back at the small mech one final time before trotting over to the pearl who lead you up a staircase, coming to a stop at two large Ameythysts who guarded the entrance.

"Whoa..." you heard one mutter once she caught sight of you, but she quickly regained her composure, clearing her throat. "Ahem, State your purpose."

"I have the new recruit (gem)." She gestures to you, in which you give them a civil nod. "She'll be working with you for today."

"Wow." The Ameythyst utters. "I thought it was just a rumor."

"Heh, yeah." The other Ameythyst grins, a friendly, cheery grin. "Pretty cool!"

You squinted your eye at this, tilting your head. These gems... they seemed a whole lot more... laid-back than most of the gems you've met.

"Don't mind them," you heard pearl mutter to you. "They were formed from earth."

Formed from earth, huh? It would seem that some gems, depending on what planet their from, act differently. These gems... they had a certain spunk to them. They seemed a bit more loose. You felt the corner of your mouth upturn into a small smile. 

So far you liked them.

"What do we have here?"
