She lifted her skirts, which were stained with dirt and postpartum blood at this point. She took a deep breath and pulled her cloak closer, but she knew it wasn't the rain that made her shiver.

The vines on the windows swayed without rhythm. A tear left her lashes before she knocked.

"I have nothing to give you in return but my prayers. But you are my only hope, after Allah." She sobbed harder.

The other woman wiped her tears and hugged her, despite the state of her clothes.

"Allah said that the one who saves a soul, it is as if he has saved all of mankind! How can I not do it?"

She wept with happiness and sorrow alike.

The two-year-old stared at the pinkish creature wrapped up so snug.

"Nanny, why it not tawk?"

"It doesn't know to yet, dear."

"Oh. Can I teach?"

"She's sleeping, so later."

She nodded. The thing had made a soft yet shrill sound for hours until nanny finally calmed it down. Nanny said it had a boo boo when they brought it. Was that why it cried so much?
