Running Into the night

"Finally.", words came out of the mouth of a boy, dressed in plain clothes, his last step on the threshold.

He looked up at the sky for one last time before clenching his fists.
He was about to put an end to his life.

Just as he was about to let go, out of nowhere somebody grabbed his torso tightly from behind making him collapse on the cold hard floor with them.

"I'm glad I made it on time.", you heavily pant.

The man only looked down in silence.

"I was just here to spend some time alone and I saw you", you finally look up at the tall man in front of you.

His face caught you by surprise.
His hair was shining in a dark black color complimenting his naturally brown eyes.
The bridge of his nose extended all the way down to his slightly parted lips, endorsed with a mole near his upper lip.
He was stunning to the point it made you speechless.

"I.. I had to.", he explained thereby breaking the silence.

"What? Why were you?... Um
Do you wanna talk to me about it?", you calm yourself in order provide him some tranquility.

"I have a mental illness.
It makes me hallucinate things I don't want to see.
It makes me do things I don't want to do.", he held his head between his arms and clenched his fists in order to suppress the tears swelling in his eyes.

"I see a Grim reaper calling out to me.
All the time.
I can't live like this anymore.", he pursed his lips as he couldn't hold back the tears anymore.

Without another word, you moved closer to him and started gently rubbing his back, indicating that it was okay for him to cry.
"You don't have to be strong all the time. It's okay, you have been holding it in very bravely all this time."

Hearing your words, he finally let his emotions loose and hugged you tightly as tears streamed down his beautiful face.
.
.
After getting a hold on himself, you both sit on the very roof of the apartment building and talked about life, more importantly his life.

"So you mean there are two types of driving forces in life?", you curiously asked.

"Yes. One is Eros, the life force; it makes you want to live. Contradicting it is thanatos, a death force.
It consistently makes you feel like dying.", he explained further.

"Oh, I get it now.
Your life is being ruled by thanatos right now.", you conclude to which he slightly nods.

"By the way, I'm Junhui."

"And thanks for saving me.
I was out of my mind back then.", he smiled for the first time.
"I'm glad I could."

"Can I...hug you for a little while?..", he motioned his hands in front of you and without second thoughts, you let him embrace you.
His beating heart resonated with yours and for a moment it felt like the whole world just disappeared.

He tightly hugged you as if he was drowning in the vast blue sea and you were his only anchor.

And it was too late to realize,
You both were in love.
.
.
The next few days were very interesting since both of you resolved to look for a solution to his problem.
There were times you talked to him about not giving up on his life since things could take a turn for the better now that you were here.
But eight out of ten times he would make reasonable counter arguments which would even get you thinking at large.

After about five days you stepped out to meet him again on the same spot where you met for the first time.
Junhui lived at the same building as yours except that you never visited each other.
You both only met at your favourite spot on the terrace of the building.

But when you open the door blocked by the wind, you kind of got deja vu.
There he was, standing tall on the edge of the roof with tears in his eyes as if it was his last goodbye; pouring water over all of your efforts in making his life, a beautiful one.
What so strange was that he was not jumping off. He was rather looking at you with tears in his gloomy eyes; eyes that were yearning for you, calling you to come and save him. But amidst all this, your body was refusing to take any voluntary actions in order to save him.
Maybe you were tired too.

Caught in the moment, you walk closer to him, who never removed his eyes from yours even for a second.
It was as if, you were enchanted.

"I want to be wherever you are", you didn't stop the tears from falling.

He only wiped your tear-stained cheek while deeply looking into your eyes and pulled you into a soft kiss.
It was disheartening to see him face this every day.
It pricked you to see him fighting so hard.
He loved you and was ready to run away with you anywhere.
Anywhere in the world..
But how could he run from himself?

He passionately kissed you for one last time and tears fell from both of your eyes because you both knew.

Neither of you opened your eyes, you both wanted this moment to never end.
The wind slowed down, as if it was a sign of catastrophe.
As if it was time for you to rest in peace, just like the leaves had rested from the wind.

Pulling away from each other, you both smiled together for a last time as if saying neither of you regret it.
You jumped, hand in hand.
One last time, he held your hand ever so tightly, as if he was never gonna let you go.
One last time, you said,
"I will always love you Junhui."
And for one last time you saw the look in his eyes, he had on the first day you both met.
.

There was blood all over the pavement.

News ran like fire about a girl falling from the sixteenth floor of a hospital.
Reporters, ambulance and your parents, all reached within an hour.
Everyone was devastated to see the poor girl.

Only girl.

There was no boy.
Why?

Because he never existed.

He was just a grim reaper doing his job.
A job of instilling thanatos into the hearts of the destined.

He was never in love with you.
Or was he?
