Chapter 14

~ THIRD PERSON POV ~

It was night time and the bon fire was just starting. As drums played, boys were holding torches, standing around a pyramid of more wood.

"Light 'em up!"
Alby exclaimed. They all threw their torches into the pyramid lighting it up into a huge bonfire.

Everyone started cheering, dancing and playing some instruments, while the greenie and Newt sat leaning against a log, backs to the fire.

"Hell of a first day greenie. Here. put some hair on your chest."
Newt said with a glint of mischief in his eyes.

The greenie took the jar and took a huge gulp or the liquid just to spit it out.

"Oh my god! What is that?"

"I don't even know. Its Gallys recipe.its a trade secret."
The greenie looked over where Gally was fighting some boy.

"Yeah well he's still an asshole."

"He saved your life today. Trust me. The maze is a dangerous place."

"We're trapped here. Aren't we?"

"For the moment. But.."
He turned around and pointed at the runners.

"You see those guys? There by the fire? Those are the runners. That guy in the middle there, that's Minho. He's the keeper of the runners. Every morning, when those doors open, they run the maze. Mapping it. Memorizing it. Trying to find a way out."

"How long have they been looking?"

"Three years."

"And they haven't found anything?"

"It's a lot easier said than done. Listen."

As they quiet down they can hear the faint sounds of the maze changing and the grievers moving about.

"Hear that? That's the maze, changing? It changes every night."

"How's that possible?"

"You can ask the people who put us here. If you ever meet the basterds. Listen, the truth is.... The runners are the only ones who really know what's out there. They are the strongest and fastest of all of us. And it's a good thing too because if they don't make it back before those doors close, then they are stuck out there for the night. And no one has ever survived a night in the maze."
Newt slightly lied.

"What happens to them?"

"Well we call them grievers. Of course no one has ever seen one and lived to tell about it. But out there."
He lied again.

"Right well that's enough questions for one night. Come on. You're supposed to be the guest of honour. "

"Oh no. No!"

"Come on. Let me show you around. Come on.'
Newt forced the greenie up.

"There we got the builders."
Newt says as they pass Gally, winning another fight.

"Very good with their hands but not a lot going on upstairs."
He said as he pointed to his head.

"Then we got Winston. He's the keeper of the slicers. Then we got two med-jacks, Clint and Jeff. They spend most of their time patching up the slicers."

"What if I wanna be a runner?"

"Heh. Have you listened to a word I said? No one wants to be a runner. And besides you have to be chosen."

"Chosen by who?"
Newt didn't get to answer because Gally accidentally threw a boy he was fighting at the greenie, interrupting them.

"What do you say, greenie? Wanna see what you're made of?"

"Gally don't. Leave the poor shank alone."

Alex spoke from behind him. Though Gally ignored her. The greenie looked at her as the rest of the gladers started chanting 'GREENIE! GREENIE!'

"Ok. alright. The rules are simple greenie. I try to push you out of the circle. You try to last more than five seconds."

Everyone started laughing. Except Alex. Though she did smirk.

"Ready?"

The greenie didn't get to answer because Galley charged at him. He was almost pushed out of the circle when some boys pushed him back in. when he went to charge at Gally he got thrown to the ground.

"Come on greenie. I'm not done with you yet."

"Stop calling me greenie."

"Stop calling you that? What do you wanna be called? Shank? What do you think? Boys?"
He looked around till his eyes fell on Alex.

"And girl."
She smirked back and shook her head slightly.

"Does he look like a shank?"

Then the 'shank' charged at Gally. They held each other's arms and pushed each other a bit, before the 'shank' was thrown to the floor again.

"You know what? I think I've settled on shank."

The 'shank' ran at Gally trying to push him but ended up getting pushed back himself. But he moved to the side and Gally fell to the ground. 'Oh shit. Now he's pissed.' Alex thought to herself.

Then Gally swept the 'shanks' legs from beneath him and stood up. The greenie hit his head. Hard. on the ground.

"Thomas. Thomas. Hey! Thomas! I remember. My name is Thomas!"

"Thomas!"
Alby cheered. Then everyone cheered.

"Welcome home Thomas."
Alby said and handed him a drink.

Gally went up and shook his hand.

"Good job... Thomas."

They were all interrupted by a griever shrieking.

"What the hell was that?"
Thomas asked.

"That my friend. Was a griever. Don't worry, you're safe here with us. Nothing gets through those walls."

"Alright boys. Let's tuck it in for the night. Come on."

Alex said. Everyone looked at her and obeyed. Thomas kept his stare on her though as Gally walked up to her and kissed her. He watched as Gally walked away and Alex walked towards him

"We have not been properly introduced. I'm Alex."
She held out her hand.

"Thomas."
He said as he shook her hand.

"So. you're the one everyone keeps talking about."

"News travels fast huh."

"So what is your job in the glade?"
He asked as they walked to his hammock.

'I'm the leader."

"Bt i thought Alby-"

"We're co-leaders. But I came up first. So I make the rules, decide what jobs the greenies get, and do what needs to be done."

"So you could make me a runner?"

"No."

"No? I thought you cou-"

"I said no. Goodnight Thomas."

And with that she walked away.
