Chapter 10
~ GALLY'S POV ~
It had been two years since I had arrived. Twelve months ago Alex and I started dating. I was so happy that we were together, until something happened with one of the runners. Minho had an injury. We still need people to run the maze to get out of here so the keepers, Alby, Newt, and Alex made a vote on who would go into the maze to replace Minho. Despite my reasoning, Alex was put up. She had to run the maze.
"Alex, you don't have to do this."
Alby said.
"No. I won't let anyone else go in there, who doesn't need to be in there."
"Bullshit. Why can't someone else go in there?"
I tried to use logic.
"Who would you suggest then Gally?"
Alby inquired.
"Me."
"No, absolutely not. This is my decision. I'm going in the maze. That's final."
"No. You're not going in there. I won't let you."
" 'let me'? You have no say in what I do and don't do. I am the leader. I got here first. If you try to stop me I will have you put in the pit for a week. Got it."
We all knew Alex as the softy. But we all knew she could be harsh. We never wanted to be on her bad side. See there should be 34 people in the glade. Not including the Greenie that's coming up in two days and Jamie. But there are only 30 people. Alex had to intervene in four fights. She broke two of their noses. The other two.... We had to pry her off of them. Nearly killed them. The only reason she's not been banished is because they all deserved it.
So I stayed silent. She had won.
She left to put on her gear and everyone else dispersed. I just stood there. I didn't know what to do. She was going out into the maze. Where she had already been hurt. Twice. Alby came back in and had to walk me out to eat something. I couldn't. I just sat there, staring at my food, with my head resting on my hands.
After the dinner bell rang that's when we all started to get nervous. Willie, the other runner, had already come back but. Alex was still in the maze. We all stood up and ran to the entrance of the maze. I had gotten there first. Then Alby and Newt, then everyone else. We waited and waited. Then the doors started to close. We still didn't see anything. I was too worried about Alex coming back. I didn't even see Willie run into the maze. When I finally did realize he was out in the maze it was too late. The door had closed and his and her fate were sealed. No one said anything. Alby was the first to break. He dropped to his knees. Newt followed. Then me, then everyone else dropped to her knees. We all stayed where we were for as long as possible, until we all passed out from exhaustion. I couldn't though. For hours my mind came up with horrible scenarios as to what's happening to her. Grievers, walls changing, Willie trying to hurt her, her falling, tripping, anything bad that could happen to her has already crossed my mind twice.
It had been hours from the time the doors closed to the gladers passing out. I'm not sure when I passed out but it couldn't have been long considering I felt like I didn't sleep at all. I would have slept longer if the doors had not opened. I had woken up first and walked to the entrance to see nothing. No one there. I felt a hand on my shoulder and saw Alby standing there, tears in his eyes. Though he refused to let them fall. We all walked away and started on our jobs. It wasn't till lunch that we heard yelling.
"HEY! I NEED SOME HELP! PLEASE HELP!"
It was faint but I knew it was Alex. I had dropped the wood and axe I was holding and ran to the entrance. There I saw Alex carrying Willie . They weren't even half way in the long hallway into the maze. I knew that if I ran in to help her I would be banished but I didn't care. So I ran in, put Willie over my shoulder, and Alex's arm over my other shoulder and carried them both. I don't know if it was the adrenalin that helped me carry them, but I did all the way to the glade. Where Alby was waiting with this look on his face. He didn't look angry, more relieved actually.
When I reached them I gave Willie to Alby and Newt and picked Alex up and carried her to the med-hut right behind Alby and Newt. As we entered, Clint gave Alex a look. She merely smiled weakly. I sat her on the bed and sat myself on the chair beside the bed.
"God. Can't you just catch a break already?"
"I've been asking the same thing for the past three years."
"So what happened to you this time?"
"Well after about three hours in the maze a griever showed up. I spent the next eight or so hours running when I saw Willie. I'm not sure why he was still in the maze. After I caught up to him I thought the griever was gone so we stopped to catch our breaths. That's when we were attacked. Willie tried to protect me but he just got hurt in the long run. I wasn't too bad thankfully so we spent the rest of the night hiding. After we heard the walls start to open up again we crawled out of our hiding spot and tried to find our way back. Willie was too injured to walk so I carried him. That's why it took so long to get here."
"God dammit. You need to stop putting yourself in these kinds of situations. We're running out of stitching thread."
Clint tried to joke. I didn't think it was funny but Alex smiled a little. In all the suffering she can still smile. It's a gift of hero's.
"I do have one question. How is Willie?"
She asked.
"I don't know. Jeff is with him. After I'm done stitching up your arm, other leg, and neck, I'll check on him and get back to you. Ok?"
"Wait her neck?"
I stood up and saw a huge gash along the right side of her neck. Started at the bottom of her neck to her collar bone. I saw her smirk a little.
"What? Why are you looking at me like that?"
I was so confused.
"You worried about me."
She said very smugly.
"Yeah well, I'd rather have my girlfriend not constantly stitched up every day."
"Ok. enough with their lovey-dovey talk. I need to stitch her up before it gets infected or I throw up. Whichever one comes first."
I stood back and watched as he stitched up her right arm, top of her elbow to her wrist. She only flinched at the wrist part. Then he stitched up her right leg, upper thigh to top of the knee. I watched him like a hawk. I think that made him a little nervous considering his hand was shaking slightly. Then he got to her neck. That was the only one where she had to take several breaks. I didn't blame her. It was a very sensitive part of the body.
"Alright we're almost done. Just 3 more stitches. Are you ready?"
"As I'll ever be."
She spoke half-heartedly.
As he finished tying up her stitch she let out a breath of relief. When Clint left , I walked up and kissed her.
"Other than you literally almost dying for the thousandth time, are you ok?"
"I will be."
After she said that, I hugged her.
It had been about five minutes when Clint came back and informed us that Willie will be ok. That night we just sat in the med-hut and talked. We fell asleep and no more scary maze scenarios ran through my mind, just peaceful sleep knowing that Alex was ok. The love of my life was ok.
