Third Person POV

"How did you..." The two men say in unison, shock written across both of their faces. "I can't believe you're alive." (Son's name) whispers, his (eye color) eyes just as wide as his father's. "I thought I would never see you again." Levi mumbles, looking up at his son. "Don't just stand there dumbfounded, hug already!" Connie snaps from behind Levi, making (son's name) chuckle slightly. Levi is the first to step forward and grab his son, relieved he survived the ambush all those years ago. "Where have you been all this time?" (Son's name) mumbles as he holds onto his father. "I'll explain to you later. It's a lot." The older man whispers, not ever wanting to let go. "And look at you, you joined the Scouts?" Levi asks when they do finally pull back. "Yeah, I had to grow up and be like my parents." (Son's name) nods with a small grin. "I wanted to be just like you, dad." He then whispers. "You already are." Levi says softly, admiring the face he hadn't seen in fifteen years. "You're an Ackerman, son. Taller than me, too."

"Last call for passengers!" A man aboard a different ship shouts, waving his arm over the railing. "That's my ship..." (Son's name) mumbles, looking over his shoulder. "Are you coming with us?" He asks as he returns his gaze to Levi. "Connie told me all about it on the ride here, I'm coming with you." Levi confirms, making his son feel better. "Good! I didn't want to leave you after you just got here." The son sighs. "Last call!" The man on the ship shouts again. "I better tell Hange bye." (Son's name) turns to face the Squad Leader who is equal in height to him. "Thank you for taking care of me, Hange. I'm going to miss you over these next few months." The boy explains, making them smile. "It's the least I could do for you and your parents, little Ackerman. Go out there and explore the world with your dad. Go make your mom and Erwin proud." Hange whispers, pulling the boy into a tight hug. "Of course, Hange." He chuckles, hugging them back just as tight.

Later that evening while the sun was beginning to set, Levi and his son sit out on the deck, on top of supply crates, and watch the sea move past them. They both had many questions for the other, wanting to know everything that happened during this time away from each other. However, neither of them knew how to start. "Mom and I thought you died back then. After the ambush. We heard multiple gunshots and assumed you had... been killed." (Son's name) mumbles as he looks over the railing and down at the water below. "I thought I died in that moment too. Then I learned they didn't have bullets for ammo. They were filled with some sort of tranquilizer. When I woke up, I couldn't recognize anything. They kept me a prisoner all this time, deep under Marley. I heard your attack. I felt so proud knowing that my comrades had found the secret and got answers to our miserable life behind those damn walls. I wasn't found until a few weeks ago, almost rotting in that cell because the guards had evacuated and never came back. I had to find a way to break out and get to the surface. Connie was the one who found me on one of your missions back to Marley. I'll forever be grateful for him." Levi explains his side, recalling those awful years alone.

"And that's how you got back here?" (Son's name) looks over at Levi, feeling bad he had to go through all of that in an unknown land without his friends or family. The father nods, leaning against the railing in front of them. "That's how I got home. Paradis? Is that what they call it?" Levi asks, the breeze blowing past the few strands of hair that fell out of the tie holding back the rest of it. "Yeah, it's called Paradis. We're opening the walls up now that there's no more threat to humanity. We're also expanding our villages and building communities outside of the walls. We have a railroad system, more livestock, and the docks you just saw back there. It's beginning to feel... normal." (Son's name) grins, excited to return home already. "I bet your mother is relieved too. She always dreamed of having a life where we didn't have to fight just to walk another day." Levi sighs, missing his wife. He was wondering where she was and how she was doing. "You look so much like her now, we both thought you were my twin but I guess that's not the case anymore." He looks back at his son, into the eyes that match his wife's. "Where is she? Is she staying back with Hange to develop more of Paradis?" The question makes the younger man freeze. He still hasn't told his father about his mother's death fifteen years ago. He wasn't ready to break his dad's heart.

"Mom was shot." The words eventually slip past his (skin tone) lips, expecting the silence after. Levi is quiet, staring at his son's side profile as he processes the information. "She was shot? When? Who did it?" He asks once able to form coherent sentences. "The day we thought you died. We hid in your closet but one of Reiner, Annie, and Bertholdt's gang got in and found us. Mom tried to get us out the window... she was so scared for us she could hardly speak properly." (Son's name) tells the story in a soft voice. Although he was very young when it happened, the trauma stuck with him, burned into his mind. "I was scared too. I didn't understand a thing nor why mom was frightened. I had never seen her act such a way. I didn't want to leave her but my hesitance cost mom's life... he shot mom and we fell out the window. I don't know if this man had one of the tranquilizers, but... mom died anyway. She died before I could hug her, before I could ask why we had to run away. Before she got to see you again. I'm sorry I couldn't protect her, dad. If I had listened to her, she'd be here on this ship right now."

(Son's name)'s story haunted his father. He never expected (f/n) to pass away so soon and so long ago without him knowing. They had promised to see each other again, when it was safe to come back. Had Levi never left their home, she would have been alive. They could have stormed Marley much sooner and life could have been normal fifteen years ago. Before Levi could remotely have a response to the news, (son's name) continues. "Hange and Erwin found me later that day. I was too scared to come out of hiding after we fell. I knew mom was gone on the spot. I wasn't strong enough to climb out of that damn hay pile to face her mutilated body..." His fists tighten in frustration with himself. "Hange took me back to the barracks and they kept me all those years. They didn't want me to live a life with strangers and hold onto that trauma by myself... They raised me along with Erwin, almost everyone in the Scouts helped out. I saw them as my new family. They'd tell me stories about you and mom. Erwin even said how proud he was of you. He knew you would have been proud of me too when I graduated Cadet Corps. Unfortunately, we lost him too along with many others..."

"He was a good man." Levi's able to muster, his throat tight from holding in his emotions. "Hange's crazy, but they were the right person to take care of my son. Erwin too." He whispers, closing his eyes and putting a hand on his forehead. "I'm so sorry I left, (son's name). I shouldn't have done it... You're not in the slightest bit responsible for your mother's passing. I was the one who put everyone in danger." The younger raven looks up at his father, surprised to see tears rolling down his pale cheeks. Never once had he seen his father cry in those short years together before they were separated. It was almost a beautiful thing to witness. "I wish I never left you, (son's name). I wish I could have seen your mother one last time. She would have loved what you and the Scouts accomplished. The ocean, new lands, new people... she would have loved it all." Levi lifts his head up, feeling foolish for finally breaking his hard shell, but (f/n) would have loved that too. "Even if she's gone... I'm just grateful to have you back." Levi whispers.

(Son's name)'s eyes water at the pain his father is feeling, getting up to hug him. "Because mom protected me over herself." (Son's name) grins softly. "We'll explore the world for her. She would want us to." He adds, feeling his father nod. "We'll tell her all about it one day." Levi sighs, holding onto his son. "So let's see everything before we do that."
