Chapter 7: Alpha (Emma's POV)

Stefan wanted to drive me back to the apartment, so I let him. He plans to Uber back to his place after that. Or maybe he'll stay the night.

I looked at him, removing my gaze from the window when I felt his hand on my thigh. "Can I ask you something, babe?" I asked, staring at him.

"Sure," he nodded.

"Why did you actually introduce yourself as my boyfriend?"

He glanced at me, seeming confused. "I told you. I wanted to ask you but I wasn't able to find the right moment. I thought it would be easier to introduce myself as your boyfriend in front of someone. Are you mad?"

"No, no, I'm not mad. I'm just confused. We never had that talk so I didn't even know you wanted me to be your girlfriend. Officially, I mean."

"Well, I did," he chuckled, looking at me. "Was that really your boss though?"

"Yeah. Why?" I asked, looking through the window, biting the skin around my nails.

"I feel like I know him from somewhere but I can't remember. And he seems pretty young to be a CEO, right?"

"I mean, he isn't old, he's our age," I chuckled awkwardly.

Stefan doesn't remember. I haven't really told him about my relationship with Tristan, I didn't think it was necessary, but he's seen pictures of Tristan and me. I had a whole box full of the stuff he got me. I was meant to throw it away as soon as I got to Boston, but I didn't. I kept it. I still have it.

"I feel like I've seen him somewhere, I really can't remember though."

"Maybe you saw an article or something about him. He gets featured in a lot of those." That's not a lie. Not a complete lie anyway.

"Maybe," he shrugged it off as we pulled into the parking lot of my apartment building. We got out, got to the elevator, and started our way up to my floor. "Your keys." He placed them in my hand.

I sighed, running a hand through my hair.

"What's wrong?" he asked, grabbing my arm and turning me around to face him before he pulled me closer, securing his arms around my waist.

"Nothing, I'm just a little tired," I smiled, resting my arms around his neck.

"Did he make you work so hard even on your first day?"

"Not really. I barely had work to do today, actually. My mind has just been running all day," I explained, brushing his hair back.

"What's on your mind?" he asked, pecking my lips.

He's on my mind. Tristan Reed is on my mind. As I stand here with my boyfriend. This is not good at all.

"Just stuff. I haven't seen my parents in a while too, I'm thinking I should visit later this month. Or maybe I'll ask them to visit. I'll have to see how work goes, right?"

He nodded slowly, his eyes trained on my lips.

"Are you planning on staying?" I asked as we reached our floor.

"We'll see," he mumbled, tucking my hair behind my ear.

I grabbed his hand, rocking our hands back and forth while we walked to my apartment. I put my bag and keys down and he closed the door behind us.

"What do you want to eat?" he asked, pulling me into the kitchen.

"Something spicy," I said, grabbing a water bottle from the fridge.
