Chapter 1: Interested (Emma's POV)

I swiped my ID card at the entrance and walked into the building, heading for the elevator. I pressed the button and then waited. I glanced at my watch. Lunch ended five minutes ago, I'm already late. "This is why I hate going outside of the building for lunch, Alyssa. We never make it back in time," I huffed, letting my hair down and retying it in a bun.

"So? Mr. Kit never says anything to you. That's because he knows if you quit, he'll come crashing down. You'll be fine," she chuckled, both of us stepping into the elevator. She stepped out on her floor and I continued to mine.

When I got there, I rushed out of the elevator and to my desk, grabbing the file I had been working on since this morning. I knocked on the door, holding the file in my hand.

"Come in."

I opened the door and walked in.

"Morning, Emma," he smiled.

"Morning, Mr. Kit. Here are all the papers and the contract of our newest client. Everything is signed and done, we're starting the printing on their book."

He smiled while I put the file down in front of him on the table. "That's great. But have a seat, will you? There's something we should discuss." It's not unusual for him to say that so I wasn't nervous. He always says that and then what he ends up saying is usually irrelevant.

I pulled out the chair across from him and sat down.

"How do you like your job here, Emma? Two years is a long time for someone to stay with us. We're a tough company and most employees only come here for a few months of experience."

That's true. And now what he's saying doesn't seem irrelevant at all. I shrugged while smiling. "It's tough because everything happens so quickly here and there's always a deadline to meet. But I like it, I think I understand everything and I'm at a place where I'm used to it now. I can handle it. But... Why do you ask?"

He cleared his throat, sipping his coffee. "Well, I'm sure you remember our last client leaving our company, terminating the contract, and going to work with Reed Publishers instead?"

I nodded slowly. I know about Reed Publishers but never bothered looking into them. It's a different department's job to check the competition. All I know is that they're the best publishing firm in all of Boston. I'm just Mr. Kit's assistant.

"Well, I had a meeting with Mr. Reed. During the conference trip in New York, I ran into him. He wanted to meet later for a one on one meeting, and we did." He sighed, drumming his fingers on the table. "And he wants you to leave us and work for him. As his assistant."

I blinked once then twice. "Oh," I mumbled.

"It's, of course, your choice."

I am so confused, this is coming out of nowhere. "Does... does that mean you're firing me?"

"No," he shook his head.

"Does that mean you want me to quit?"

"Not quite," he sighed. "You see, you are one of the best, if not the best employee here at our firm. But I don't just want you to be stuck here forever. You're a great employee and you're perfect for this job. I feel that Reed Publishers would challenge you a little bit more. They're a lot tougher than we are. Everything is a lot faster there, Mr. Reed is a little more strict than I am, but his employees go on to do great things. A lot of them have their own small publishing firms within a few years of working there. You've finally graduated from college and I think it's time you push yourself a little harder. I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried about myself," he chuckled.
