“The dream was floating off satisfactorily on an inner sea.”

“We went to see Jimmy today.” Johnny stood nervously at Matt’s bedside. “We sang him Happy Birthday.” He pulled out his smart phone and played the video of a dozen voices singing together in the cemetery, hoping it would comfort the sleeping man, entertain him, make him happy. Best case scenario, it would wake him up. “I hope he heard us. Jimmy always was one for birthday parties. He’s turning thirty today. That’s a big number.”

Johnny looked down at Matt and whispered, “The doctor’s quite certain you’ll never wake up. He got pissed after Zacky beat his face in.” Johnny chuckled softly to himself. “The fucker deserved it, if you ask me. But you’re not sick anymore, they said the pneumonia is receding. That’s an improvement, right? Maybe you’ll wake up soon after all.”

As if it were an answer to his musing, Matt let out a sigh.
