We stopped at a little bakery to get some food and take a break from walking. Of course, by bakery I mean a place that has bread. That's all most places have the ingredients to make anymore. Just bread and carbs and water. This bakery had a few pastries, though, which was nice to see.
People don't really use forms of currency around here anymore. It's more of a 'you give me something and I'll give you something back' type of thing now. Everyone just traded items or favors depending on what they need or their set of skills. It's sweet, though, watching people get along despite everything that's happened. Without WCKD there isn't really any form of government telling them what to do and how to do it, yet there's complete peace. Maybe a couple fights here and there at the most. I guess we don't really need other people to tell us how to be good people. Tragedy really does bring us all together.

The woman who owned the bakery had a son who was showing symptoms of the flare. I would've helping him for free, but she insisted to treat us all to a meal in exchange for serum for both of them. I couldn't say no to the pleading look in her eyes. I had bottles of serum in my backpack in case of emergency or in case of something like this.
"May I take you to him? He's upstairs.. it's hard for me to face him by myself," she asked, sadness lacing her voice.
"Of course, yeah.." I responded as she took my hand and led me up the staircase in the back of her shop. At the top of the staircase was a room, the door barely cracked open. As I looked in I could see a boy, around my age, strapped down to a bed. His breathing was heavy and jagged. He looked miserable.
"I try not to go in there too often. I didn't want to get sick too... but maybe you can help me," she said it as if it were a question. Tears puddled at her eyes, not daring to spill out.
"You go downstairs. I'll come down to you when I'm done," I said softly to the woman. She looked so fragile I was afraid the wrong tone might just break her. She nodded quickly and went back down to feed my group.

I slowly walked into the room where the boy was. His eyes were shut and he was gripping on to the side of the bed despite being restrained at the wrists. His veins were visible through his skin and he was drenched in sweat. His lips were chapped and his hair was a mess. The smell in there was terrible, as it usually is in these cases. I let out a small cough and his eyes shot open. His pupils were so dilated that it would be terrifying to anyone who hasn't seen it a million times before. He was trembling.

"Who.. the hell.. are you?" he asked between jagged breaths, his tone was angry. I was shocked for a second, but I couldn't blame him. I would be angry too if I were in that situation. I'm very lucky for the gift that I have.
"I'm surprised you can even talk in this condition," I joked with him lightheartedly as I set my bag down on the table beside him. He didn't look very amused.
"What do you want? Why are you even near me?" this time his voice sounded more sad than angry. He seems like he's a nice guy outside of whatever the flare is putting him through. I dug down to the bottom of my backpack and pulled out a syringe and a bottle of serum.
"I think it's more about what you want," I said, holding it up for him to see. His eyes softened and his breathing became quieter.
"You're the one my mom has been talking about. The one giving everyone hope," he said and I smiled at him.
"Hey my friend Thomas is pretty cool too. His blood cures people as well," I clarified. I noticed Thomas doesn't get much praise, but Thomas also hasn't been going out of his way to help like I have so I can see why.

"Your friend? I thought you two were arranged to get married..? That's what other people have said," he questioned and I choked on my own spit. My brain was not prepared for that at all. I had a quick coughing spell and he laughed. "I take that as a no."
"They said what?" I croaked out, just barely getting a hold of myself. He smirked at my reaction.
"Something about you two getting married and having kids that could cure people too," he said, amusement in his tone.
"No. That was never a thing. Never has been a thing. Jesus..." I trailed off, shocked by what I'd just heard. People just can't help themself from spreading rumors.

"Listen, it makes sense. Who's gonna be left to help people when you're both gone. I don't think it'd be a bad idea-" I cut him off before he could finish his reasoning.
"Thomas and I are just friends. That's all we've ever been. Now do you want this serum or not?" I asked, giving him a warning look before he got to say another word. He looked at me with a smirk but stayed quiet. I injected him with the serum, this was always my favorite part.
As it flooded through his veins, you could see the instant relief in his face. His muscles relaxed and he let out a deep sigh. His eyes drifted shut as he started to fall asleep. He was no longer in pain. That's what I loved about it.

While he was sleeping, I gave the same to his mother. It works like a vaccine for the ones who aren't infected. She had given me extra food while everyone else was already eating. The gratitude in her voice when she thanked me was heartwarming. She also let her tears out for the first time as she gave me a hug. She offered for us to come back and stay whenever we needed. Jorge thought it was necessary for us to stay the night, so we waited for the two to wake up from their naps.

He thinks she might know something.
