Cover it up

Her shirt is hanging off her shoulder.

They tell her to wait until she’s older.

Her skin is too distracting.
To all the men it’s attracting.

Because she is a woman.

They will treat her like she’s not human.

99 percent of women get assaulted each year.

Yet we are still told we have no need for fear.

We cannot show a little leg.

Without men taking that as if we beg.

As if we beg for them to grab our arms.

As if we beg for them to do us harm.

We cannot go out alone.

Because we never know if we’re going to make it home.

Pull up that shirt.

Pull down that skirt.

Don’t show too much!

But now you’re not showing enough!

We cannot win when the system is against us.

When the rape and assault won’t be discussed.

Because the men who do it are so widely loved.

They will ask if he was gloved.

“Yes.” But what does it matter?

He still did it and told her she should be flattered.

They can’t catch him because there’s no evidence.

Why won’t they just compare handprints?

Now she is scared to live alone.

But it will still happen inside her home.

Because the system is rigged so the men will win.

Even when they admit they did it with a grin.

“Her hair was up, her neck looked so nice.

I knew she’d like it if I forced her lips on mine.”

“Her shirt was low cut.

I knew she’d like it when the door was shut.”

He stood there, never letting her escape.

When she said no, it became rape.

He took her shirt and skirt off.

He took her there in the trough.

Stripped her of her innocence she once held onto.

Even after she said she didn’t want to.

But the judges and cops asked what she was wearing that night.

As if her clothing gave him that right.

“You should’ve been covered up.
You shouldn’t have been wearing makeup.”

They’ll convince her the whole thing was her fault.

Just because of what she wore the night of the assault.

Now she’s learned to cover it up.

But not to keep her head up.

The entire thing was not her fault.

The man who did it needs to be put in a vault.

She did nothing wrong that night.

And she put up quite a fight.

But he was too strong for her to push him off herself.

No one stopped to help.

The whole thing could have been avoided if we taught men to respect women.

But now to women, most men are the villains.

**************************
As humans, we should have compassion for others.

99 percent of women are raped and assaulted yearly.

We are not saying it is all men, but it is most women that have to deal with it.

Rape and assault are serious subjects and confessions of such should not be taken lightly.

If you are a survivor, you have my full respect and I want to thank you for being strong. Not for others but yourself. I also want to say I'm so proud of you for living on even when it was tough.

Whatever happened was not your fault, please remember that.

Love always, Caitlin.
