saturday, january twenty-first, two thousand fifteenth

• •

there are no words
to describe
the feeling
the anticipation

the thrill
of standing in front of
hundreds of people
with her heart wide open
for them all to see.

• • •

she takes a deep breath
and attempts to climb
the stage,
slipping
and falling
and being caught
in the arms of someone.

• •

"careful," he says
his voice is a gentle hum
"i'm scared," she admits
he hums again
"me too"

• •

he extends his hand
she takes it
the two of them climb the stairs
creak
another step
another creak
until they are both
on the platform
staring out into the eyes of the crowd

• •

he releases her hand
and starts to tune
she does the same,
her heart skipping a beat
the crowd is murmuring
he strums a gentle chord
they fall silent

• •

"ready?"
"ready"
and the two begin to play

• •

their guitars echo one another
his croons
hers trills
together, like a pair of birds,
singing a soft melody
in the early morning,
they captivate their audience.

• •

his voice is low as he sings,
"when you're down and troubled
and you need some love and care
and nothing, nothing is going right
"

she chimes in, their eyes locking,
"close your eyes and think of me
and soon I will be there
to brighten up even your darkest night
"

• •

he smiles and she blushes,
but returns the curve of his lips.
she closes her eyes
and tries to calm the erratic
beating of her heart

thud.
thud.
thud.

• •

he closes his eyes
and tries to calm
the thunder in his chest

thud.
thud.
thud.

• •

their voices and instruments
combine as one,

"you just call out my name
and you know wherever I am
i'll come running, to see you again
winter, spring, summer or fall

all you have to do is call
and I'll be there
you've got a friend.
"

• •

the last chord is strummed.
the last note is sung.
the crowd erupts into applause,
whistles,
cheers.

they open their eyes,
their gazes locking on one another.

thud.
thud.
thud.

• •

he smiles.
she smiles back.

• •

they had both fallen in deep.
tumbling towards the unknown.
fingers intertwined.
slowly succumbing to a four-letter word
that both had thought themselves
to be incapable of

i think i'm falling for her, he thinks
as she silently muses the same

• •

and they did just that: fell for each other, slowly but surely.
