Chapter 16 The 57th Expedition Part 4

Y/N and the others were riding their horses back to Karanese District along with some other soldiers.

"Are we withdrawing because the plan was a success?" Jean asked

"If it was, we may have finally identified the one who was controlling the Female Titan." Armin said

"Damn it... Annie." Y/N thought angrily

"I'd like to see them, but what made the Commander so sure they would chase Eren once he left the walls?" Jean asked

"I think it had to do with why the Titans suddenly stopped attacking during the last incident." Armin said

"Huh?" Jean looked at him confused

"Despite managing to break through Trost District's gate, they didn't continue to attack any farther and stayed back when Eren sealed the gate. Could it have been because they had more pressing concerns?" Armin asked

"Meaning?" Jean asked

"Something even more important than destroying the walls. Remember the unexpected event that happened next." Armin said

"You mean Eren's transformation?" Jean asked

"That's the only thing I can think of." Armin said

"Which means... Uh, so..." Jean thought for a moment

"Someone who was there, who saw Eren transform into a Titan, is the one inside that Titan." Armin said

"Armin's getting closer you damn woman. If he notices the appearance of your Titan, he'll narrow down to two people. It's either you or Christa." Y/N thought

Unknown to Y/N, Annie has already killed Levi Squad and captured Eren, but eventually stopped and Eren was recaptured.

Y/N was putting corpses on wagons with Jean and Armin in silence until Jean spoke.

"I can never get used to this." Jean said

"The same goes for everyone." Armin said

"How my comrades are going to die... How I'm going to die... That's all I can think about." Jean said

"I try not to dwell with that. Since if I were to imagine my end, I probably won't be able to fight anymore." Armin said

"I also try not to think about dying since we're all gonna die in the end anyways. I don't really mind dying in a gruesome way. This is the job I chose, but I'd rather die peacefully and not being eaten by a Titan." Y/N said

"Yeah. It's just as you say." Jean said and they continued what they were doing

They continued their expedition back to Karanese District on horse withut fighting Titans until someone fired a red smoke signal.

"What?" Y/N looked behind him and saw two people far from the group carrying a corpse and two Titans were following them.

The two Titans grabbed one of the scouts that led them to the group.

"At this rate they'll catch us!" Christa said

"Yeah, I know." Y/N said

"Then what should we do?" Christa asked

"We throw the bodies." Y/N said

Christa looked at him with a serious face.

"We can't fight here and there aren't any tall trees nor building here. It'll be hard to fight." Y/N said

They looked to the side and they were now tossing bodies.

"Good thing they knew what to do." Y/N said

When they finished throwing the bodies, the cart became lighter and faster as they left the Titan that was chasing them.

They finally arrived inside the walls, but people were looking at them in pity.

"Weren't there fewer than them in the morning?"

"They've lost quite a few."

"Yet another disaster."

"They made a real racket when they left in the morning, but they're back already."

"What'd they go for?"

"No idea."

People continued talking shit about the Survey Corps and Y/N noticed the two kids from earlier.

The two kids smiled at Y/N and waved at him, but Y/N tried to smile at them and waved at them. The two kids' smile became brighter and they saluted to Y/N.

Y/N looked away from them and wore a sad expression on his face.

"They'll all die. Not even a single soul on this island will be saved." Y/N thought looking at the others

Y/N suddenly slaps his face with both of his hands and they looked at him confused.

"Huh?" Y/N looked around

"Ah... Sorry." Y/N apologized and they continued walking

Christa just looked at Y/N worriedly while Ymir looks at her and Y/N.
