Female "Empowerment"

This might be one if the most worrying aspect of these books. We love a revenge story, I am willing to accept that. But usually the revenge is served as women changing themselves completely physically and emotionally, that makes them more "strong". I say that in quotes because there can never be one and only one definition of strong. All of us are strong. When violence against women is used as a plot device to make the character strong, then we have a problem. It's not empowering to be bullied, beaten, raped or harassed. Yet so many books use this as their "Phoenix" Moment for women. We don't need abuse to become powerful. We already are. I really do wish female characters don't have their sweetness and kindness beaten out off them and have it called strength.

Credits to Jessica Chastain for pointing this out and making me realise this.
