Promise? Promise.

"Lisa, I told you already! Mom and Dad put me in charge. Everyone has to stay at home! So, for the trillionth time, NO! You can't go to that party! I don't care if Teresa's parents are home or not. You are staying right here, young lady," Christina scolded Lisa, crossing her arms over her chest to finalize her decision.

Lisa scowled and whispered something under her breath.

"What did you say?"

"I said," Lisa began, raising her voice up an octave. "I said I hate you. I hate you!"

The thirteen-year-old stormed out of the room, nearly breaking the floorboards in the process.

Christina simply shook her head and took a seat on the sofa, putting her elbows on her knees and resting her head in her hands.

She heard light footsteps getting louder by the second, and the teenager assumed it was Lauren, coming to comfort her, or Lisa, coming to her senses.

She assumed wrong.

It was Dani, the little six year old with a large toothy grin and the cutest voice.

"Christina, what's wrong?" Dani asked sympathetically, tapping her older sister on the shoulder.

"Lisa hates me," she said under her breath, before smiling and saying, "nothing, Dan-dan."

Dani shook her head. "Lisey doesn't hate you, Chrissy!"

Christina chuckled lightly. Dani was adorable. "She's mad at me, because I didn't let her go out with her friends."

The younger girl shrugged.

"I mean, I didn't let her have a playdate."

"Oh. Why?" Dani questioned, tapping her foot impatiently. However, it was hard for her older sister to take her seriously because of the giant smile upon her little face.

"Mommy and Daddy said no," Christina explained, wrapping an arm around Dani's shoulders.

"Oh. But still, I don't think she hates you."

"Why not?"

"Because she's your sister," Dani said, sitting down on the couch text to Christina.

The teenager rose an eyebrow. "And?"

"And she loves you!" The child exclaimed, jumping off the couch, flailing her arms in the air.

Christina smiled. Dani was so... genuine.

"You sure 'bout that?"

Dani nodded eagerly. What she was so excited about, Christina didn't know.

"Will you make an unbreakble vow?" Christina inquired, laughing when she saw the confused look on Dani's face. "Oh, I mean... Promise?"

Christina stuck out her pinky finger, and Dani happily locked her's around her sister's.

"Promise."

"So often we try to make others feel better by minimizing their pain, by telling them that it will get better (which it will) or that there are worse things in the world (which there are). But that's not actually what I needed. What I actually needed was someone to tell me that it hurt because it mattered. I have found this very useful to think about over the years, and I find that it is a lot easier and more bearable to be sad when you aren't constantly berating yourself for being sad." |John Green|
