Don't be too specific.

For example; "Would you like some coffee?" She asks, pointing to the cart across the path.

vs. "Would you like some coffee?" She asks, gesturing to the cart across the path.

By changing the word from 'pointing' to 'gesturing' the action has been made more natural. Sure, someone could 'point' to the cart in that situation but you need to keep in mind that readers are watching it play out in their heads as they read. Sometimes they have to stop if they come across a stuff word/action. Sometimes we don't need to be too specific.
