Chapter Thirteen (Noah)

"He still doesn't believe me."

I felt more like a child complaining than a distressed werewolf, but I didn't care. I had to let the world know that my mate wouldn't love me because my idiotic past self let him die. Or rather, gave the order to let him die. The more I thought about it, the more my chest ached.

I looked up to get a response from either Gavin or Remi, but both of them seemed to be thinking about it. I frowned, sitting up on the sofa, leaning against the back as I folded one leg over the other, mimicking Gavin's royal posture. Remi was far more laidback, though, and just leaned his arms on his knees in the sense that made him look badass rather than the softy he was underneath.

"What do I do?" I asked at last. Gavin glanced at me, looking a bit tired. He probably stayed up all night with Kasper, trying to convince him that it wasn't his fault. And seeing as I hadn't seen Kasper since the night he ran away from us, I guessed that nothing Gavin said was working.

"You need to show him that you're serious. And you have to be less annoying about it." Gavin added flatly now, leaning back to fold his arms over his chest. I gave him a sour look.

"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked. Remi hid a laugh behind a cough, then averted his eyes when I scowled at him. I looked back at Gavin, who smirked.

"Luka's actually way more immature than he makes himself out to be. He doesn't want to listen to any sappy soap opera lines--"

"That's his fault." I pointed at Remi, who blushed.

"I never said recite The Young and The Restless, I just said get him to talk to you first, then go from there." Remi replied defensively, shrugging his shoulders and slouching in his seat in the manner that a teenager would when fed up in class. I rolled my eyes, then looked at Gavin, who snorted before continuing.

"Anyway. Before you can even begin to make him like you, you need to tell him what really happened. You need to remember why you ordered Luka's death." Gavin informed. Remi blinked and looked at me, shocked.

"Wait, what? That's why he hates you? Because you killed him?" He asked in disbelief. Gavin stared at him.

"Do I even know you?" He deadpanned. Remi ignored him and just stared at me, waiting for a response as I grimaced.

"He thinks I did. I remember my first meeting with Luka. We were in a tavern in the Middle East some one thousand years ago or more," I explained carefully, watching as Gavin stared at me now, listening intently, "After that, I knew Luka was my mate. I felt it. We were together all the time, even in battle, save for dangerous occasions when I made him stay at our palace... I remember one time when he told me he'd never tried strawberries and I ordered one of my guards to fetch some. He adored them. And I told him I had never tried apricots and he acted as if I'd never heard of the Beatles, so he made an apricot grow from one of the seeds Kira had left behind."

"Kira?" Remi and Gavin asked in unison, pausing to look at each other sourly before looking back at me as I blinked, then reached up to run a hand through my hair thoughtfully.

"Luka's caretaker... Uh, Luka's parents were burned alive in their village for witchcraft. He lived alone for a few months in their cottage until he met a woman in the woods named Kira... She raised him and was the one who encouraged him to become a general. She's the one that brought us together in the first place by making Luka come to the tavern to meet me." I explained slowly, watching Gavin frown. Remi was also frowning, leaning back in his seat again.

"What happened to her?" Gavin asked after a while. I shifted uncomfortably, glancing at the ceiling before looking at Gavin.

"She disappeared the day I arrived at Luka's palace. Luka was really upset. He cried for almost two days straight. It was like he lost another parent." I admitted. Gavin averted his eyes thoughtfully, then looked back at me.
