“Are you going church today?” Ruba read a text message from Maria. Ruba was still lying in bed, trying to sleep in. Ruba read the text and closed her eyes again.

A few minutes later, Ruba’s phone started to vibrate again, waking Ruba from her sleep.

“Are you going to come? Or just lie in bed all day?” Maria texted.

Ruba put the phone down on her bedside table and resumed trying to sleep again. It was just a matter of time until there was a vibrating noise again.

One hour later.

Ruba was far into her sleep again when she heard her phone vibrate.

“Oh my God!” Ruba sighed frustratedly. Ruba read the text from Maria again.

“It will really benefit you if you come. I know you’ll like it! Otherwise I’ll come round later.”

Ruba clicked reply and wrote. “I don’t want to go Maria. Maybe some other time…” Ruba hit send. She felt bad for not going, so she replied again, innocently. “…But feel free to come round today.”

“Ruba… I’ll see you after church…” Maria sent back.

Ruba smiled and place her phone back on the bedside table and closed her eyes.

Ruba was in the kitchen getting a bottle of water from the fridge when she heard the doorbell ring. Ruba closed the fridge and started towards the front door.

“Hey!” Maria greeted.

“Hi Maria!” Ruba greeted back.

Ruba stepped to the side of the door, leaving room for Maria to enter the house. Ruba closed the door whilst Maria started to speak.

“Aren’t you going to ask me how church was today?” Maria smiled towards Ruba.

Ruba plainly spoke. “… Um no… do you want a drink or something?”

“Nah, I’m good. I ate at church. Why not?”

“Why not, what?” Ruba asked.

“Why not ask me how church was?”

Ruba started towards her bedroom and motioned for Maria to follow. “Because… I know it was boring… just like yesterday’s service…”

They entered Ruba’s room.

“Make yourself at home…” Ruba smiled to Maria.

Maria was walking to go sit on Ruba’s bed. “Nice room, you sure have a lot of candles… Oh my God… your bed is so-“ Maria tripped over Ruba’s rug on the floor and fell right on her side. Ruba’s head sharply rotated to Maria, to see her lying on the floor. Ruba rushed over and got on her knees to help her up.

Maria’s head was dangling down while Ruba was helping her to stand up. That was when Maria’s eyes fixed to the ground where the rug was lifted and a pentagram was starring right at Maria’s eyes.

Maria was standing up right and fixed her clothes, hair and then pointed to the pentagram. “Ruba… what is that?”  Maria knew what it was, but was shocked and wanted to see what Ruba would say.

Ruba ran over to the rug and covered the pentagram.  “Um… it was there when my mum and I moved here. I brought the rug to cover it up…”

Nice save.

“Oh…” Maria’s eyebrows rose. Maria headed over to Ruba’s bed and sat down. Moving her head around to see Ruba’s room.

Ruba was by her desk, clearing things up; making sure nothing else was on show.

“… I know what you are Ruba…” Maria looked at Ruba.

Ruba froze and turned around slowly, composing herself. Fear travelling through her body, her hands were shaking.

How did Maria know?

“Know what?” Ruba questioned.

Maria started to stand. “I know that you practice witchcraft…”

No lies now. Ruba had to tell the truth.

“Wh- how do you know? And don’t tell me, ‘lucky guess.’”

Maria started towards Ruba. “Hm… you don’t like church. But I thought that was normal. Most teens don’t exactly like church.” Maria breathed in and exhaled. “The amount of candles… not to mention they’re black… and lastly the pentagram…” Maria looked Ruba in the eyes. “It wasn’t left there from before, was it Ruba?”

Ruba stuttered out her words. “N-n-no. It wasn’t.” Ruba looked to the ground in shame.

Ruba started to get the feeling, over the last couple of days, that it was a bad idea turning to witchcraft.

“its okay, Ruba!” Maria started. “I accept that you’re… different.” Maria struggled. “… It doesn’t mean I’m not going to talk to you. I’m completely fine in having a friend who practices witchcraft...”

 Kind of short, I know...

I hope you enjoyed it and please leave a comment telling me what you think. :D
