“Curtains open.” Ruba called out from her bed. The curtains opened, moving outward and bringing a dark glow from outside. “Uh… lights!” Ruba had an even clear view of the world outside. She could see grey clouds covering the sky and rain drops, hitting on her window.  “Door… open!” Ruba got out of bed and walked to her door and made her way to the bathroom.

Sure, Ruba was well and everything was going fine, but it didn’t mean she could just use magic all the time. Maybe she just feels content… complete when using magic.

Ruba reached her hand out to her wardrobe and twisted her hand as if she were opening it herself. The wardrobe opened and Ruba walked over to it, not knowing what to wear; she stood at the entrance of her wardrobe and out came jeans and a top.

It’s not that Ruba isn’t capable of opening her wardrobe and getting clothes herself. She’s completely capable. It’s the fact that she’s got the power to do so.

So, why waste that, right?

“I know a girl who’s obsessed with a guy,

She talked for hours and still tomorrow

She’ll call again and when he thinks

That this could be the end, she

Calls again…” Ruba turned up her iPod in her iPod dock and started dancing around to Vacation by Simple Plan.

“… At six in the morning

She waits at the door, he tells

Her to leave but still tomorrow

She’ll be there again…

She won’t go.”

“Can’t you just go somewhere

On vacation…”

Ruba’s phone started ringing underneath the loud song that was playing. She walked over to it.

“… I could book your flight and pack your bags if you want –“  Ruba hit pause on her iPod and answered her phone.

“Hey Michael!”

“Hey Ruba! How are you?”

Bobbing her head up and down, Ruba replied. “I’m good! Yourself?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. Just seeing if you were… we haven’t seen you in two weeks, since we done the spell…”

“Oh right! Sorry, I’ve just been kinda busy… why don’t you come round? Tell the others too. I’ll be waiting, say around twelve?”

“Yeah. See you then! Bye Ruba!”

“Bye Michael!”

“You seem very happy today Ruba!” Kaitlin looked behind her shoulder, while cleaning the plates in the sink.

Ruba gave a victory smile. “Yeah… I guess I am…”

“Oh, and the black hair… It suits you.” Kaitlin turned back to the dishes. “… Of course, it wouldn’t have hurt if you told me you were going to dye it. But it suits you!”

Ruba’s eyes widened in shock and her hands fell to her head. “My hair?”

Ruba ran to the downstairs bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror.

Pale face… slightly veiny, black hair…

“Oh, no! Not again!” Ruba cried out to herself.

Ruba ran upstairs to her bedroom and locked herself inside… of course with magic. She started pacing up and down her room, scared of what could be happening to her. “Oh no, no, no, no, no!”

Talking to herself, Ruba was worried and scared. “It can’t be! I haven’t been using magic that much…” It was like Ruba was a broken record. She was on repeat. Tugging at the roots of her hair she began again. “It can’t be! I haven’t been using magic that much…” “It can’t be! I haven’t been using magic that much…”

Ruba fell to the ground, holding her knees and rocking forwards and backwards. Sulking in her knees as to why she let it get this far!

… Because she was addicted? Too blind, too oblivious to the fact that she was using too much. Oblivious to the fact that she used magic for the simplest things like: Opening doors, getting a glass of water…

Standing up, with flames fuming through her body, Ruba motioned her arm to her desk and pushed everything to the floor, without actually using her arms.

Magic… again…

The room was spinning. The room was going clockwise and Ruba was going anti-clockwise; motioning her arms to destroy everything in her room. By the end, everything was destroyed; everything that was in her sight was on the floor. Ruba stopped and looked around her room breathing heavy, eyes narrowing whenever she felt rage build up inside of her.

Ruba heard a door slam. Her mother must have gone to work. Ruba – too busy in her world, didn’t even realise her mum’s goodbye. Ruba walked to her mirror and looked at herself.

Eyes gone black.

The more rage, the more magic… the more her eyes would get black and wider. As well as her skin going pale and veiny and her hair going black.

Ruba narrowed her eyes at herself in the mirror. She lifted her right arm and commanded for the door to open. Ruba left her room in a hurry, pushing her desk on the way out her room.

She walked down the stairs in fury, stomping her feet. Ruba entered the living room and switched the TV on, watching whatever’s on to calm her down. Finding it hard to calm down, Ruba couldn’t sit still.  She tried sitting in different positions to get comfortable. Lying on the sofa, sitting with her legs crossed…

Ruba got irritated that she couldn’t get comfortable, so sighed a loud sigh and sat in the normal position.

Not concentrating on the TV, Ruba saw her friends in her mind at her front door, getting ready to ring the doorbell. Ruba opened the door through her mind and resumed watching the TV gain.

* * *

The door opened as Amy was about to ring the doorbell. Amy, Willow, Joseph and Michael all looked at each other in curiosity and walked inside Ruba’s house. They all walked towards the living room where they saw Ruba sitting watching TV.

Joseph went and stood behind Michael. “Oh my God…”

* * *

Ruba’s friends walked through the living room door and froze in their tracks. Ruba turned her head towards them. “I can’t… I can’t stop…” Ruba faced the TV again.

Amy walked towards Ruba and sat next to her on the sofa. The others followed, not knowing what to do. Amy looked at Ruba in sympathy while Ruba began speaking.

“I’m scared! I’m scared that I can’t stop! I’m scared because I’m changing.”

Amy placed a hand on Ruba’s shoulder.

“… I need help!” Ruba had tears running down her face. “I want to stop, but can’t! I’m addicted. I can’t stop… please help me…” Ruba fell into Amy’s arms and started crying.
