Prologue

Maddy

"Ryder?!?" I called. He had been missing for months and the authorities I was going to were no help. I was even going into dark alleys. In the darkest little alley I had ever been in, a tall shadow covered the ground ahead of me. As I turned around, a dark figure, dressed in black approached me "Don't play games, Ryder." I scolded. I knew it was him automatically because of his coat. He was trying way too hard to look menacing. His cloak was pitch black with double zippers, so as to not inhibit movement.

"Hhhhaaaaahhhhhaaaa." The figure cackled as he took off his pitch black hood. The bright, blood red eyes that had once been a blueish green peered at me underneath his blonde-as-sunrise hair, a maniacal smile on his face, his gloved hands moved, removing the famed "Soul Punisher" from the sheath on his back The sword was blue, with a sea green tint, with a bright red eye on the hilt, just like Ryder's eyes. The Soul Punisher is a blade that can only be won in a duel with an evil vampire(how a human got it is beyond me, unless...). It's old name was Soul Eater and it was a murder weapon. So I heard, the wielder uses it to punish evil. As he put himself in a ready position(he's a renowned swordsman. Even at his young age, he was making quite a fortune from the dueling tournaments which he participated in weekly. Swords are the only thing he is better than me at), the blade above his head, pointing at me, his other hand set to balance himself, his hand outstretched, I screamed at him,

"Where have you been? You've been missing for months now, your mother has been so worried!" I looked at his teeth and saw two long, shining fangs. I demanded of him, "And why do you look like a vampire?" I saw worry flood his face before he tried to hide it, "Before I answer, how many vampire councils are there in the world?"

"Twenty three," I said carefully, knowing what was next, shifting ever so slightly to grab a loose brick sticking from the alley wall.

"Only a vampire would know that," he said menacingly. Then I noticed that the blade was once again on his back. We had been friends for quite a long time, ten years to be exact, an entire decade, but neither of us had divulged our vampire identities to each other, no matter how much we trusted each other, nor had he shown me Soul Punisher before this very moment(now I understand why my mom said to let Ryder have bagged blood if he wants it. The reason he told my mother and not me, I didn't know. He told me later on that he liked my mom more than me, which was understandable, since I often was rather rude).

"Only a vampire would know to ask that," I snapped back, coming a step closer. I could hardly see him, his black coat blended in with everything, and the only way I could see him was his bright red eyes, gleaming in the eternal darkness.

"We're both vampires, and you know it," I could see the blood gleaming on his fangs, showing that he had fed from a human recently. His red lips, teeth, and maniacal eyes began to close in, looking for someone to beat up.

"Bite me," I retorted stepping even closer. He stopped moving forward, as if he was surprised that I had the guts to stand up to him, "And, prove it." His coat swept me up in a dark inferno as he spun, trying to confuse me. I had never seen something move so fast in my very few years of being a vampire. I could barely keep track of his movements, and the only way I could was the flashes of bright red near the top of the black cyclone. Suddenly, he was in my face, eyes and mouth gleaming, holding me by the collar of my blue and green t-shirt with one hand, and the other casting a spell with many layers of symbols, that was also the blood red color of his eyes, to lock my limbs in place so that I could not move.

"You just did," he said, letting go of my t-shirt, leaving me suspended in the air via the full air body bind spell(yep, he left me hanging), "The only people in the world that have that knowledge are vampires. So what better way to test you." I tested my torso, finding that I could move this, feeling perfectly confident that, had I been unbound, I was more powerful than he(unless he had another sword with him. Then I was screwed[yes, he can dual-wield]). "Unless you weren't at the last meeting," he explained, pacing in front of my hovering body(I'm ashamed to say that I wasn't), "You'd know that vampire SLAYERS are loose in Whatcom County." I gasped, struggling, my torso and head the only things I could move, "Even you should know that. A few are posing as teachers in the schools, as a matter of fact, I have a list of just a few," he said importantly as he took out his brand new phone(I couldn't see the brand because he was walking behind me, circling me),

"Mr. Benderyacht, Ms. Grappler, Mrs. Finkelman, Mr. Drenkendan, Mrs. Buglestad, and Mr. Fray." I was incredibly surprised at how many slayers he could keep track of. "Mr. Glarmensing is a retired slayer," he continued, not noticing my look of shock, "He is always saying he lived on a farm, but he never said it was full of slayers." Once again he surprised me by even knowing the man's life, "Some slayers are posing as students as well, Elliot Hayes, Colton Harrell, and Bristol Bain. There are ninety seven other students in Whatcom on the list, along with ninety four teachers."

"But why Whatcom, of all places?" I asked sardonically, still struggling against my red restraints

"The answer is quite simple," he said sarcastically, "The Northern Council is hosting a trial that should not take place at all, one that Slayers could infiltrate."

"Whose trial?" I asked, concerned, still struggling to move my legs and arms.

"My own," I gasped as he said the words. The spell wore off, and I fell to the ground, pain shooting up my leg as I landed funny on it. Ryder held me upright and my leg began to heal at an alarming speed, far faster than normal, then I noticed the blood red glow of a spell out of the corner of my eye.

"What charges could the council possibly put against you?"

"I have no clue. The best guess I have is that they want to kill all vampires that know about how they are communing and working with the slayers. I don't know how they intend to do it, but I want to be ready.
