Chapter 48

Present time: Nidavellir

Thor did the only thing that he could. He raised his hands and braced for impact. The thunder god caught the war hammer just inches from his head, the force of the impact jarred right through him, the masonry below him spider webbed and cracked

"I'm going to feel this for weeks" Muttered Thor as he kept his elbows and shoulders locked in place, he took a firm grip on the hammer and held it in check. Gymir roared out his frustration, he tried to use maimed arm to add more pressure, this was his last chance to end the wretched thunder god once and for all. The giants rage turned to shock and almost awe as he felt the hammer beginning to rise, he applied more pressure but it was no use. Thor was slowly rising, his face was red, and the muscles in his neck and arms were corded under the strain. The thunder god got both his feet under him and in one violent motion he ripped the hammer free from the giants hand and tossed it aside. The giant could only stand and watch helplessly as his hammer flew to the ground, crushing several soldiers as it landed. Thor didn't pause, he retrieved Mjollnir. Gymir couldn't do anything, he just stood and watched as lightning flared all over the magical war hammer. Thor hurled a massive stream of lightning that hit the giant square between the eyes. Maybe it was one blow too many or perhaps blood loss from the severed hand. Gymir slowly toppled backwards and crashed to the ground, crushing yet more enemy soldiers that were too slow to get out the way. Thor raised Golden Mjollnir high above his head and roared out a cry of victory. He turned to find Freyr standing with his arms crossed and an unimpressed look on his face

"I could have finished him in half that time"

Thor made a warning growl deep in his chest and hefted Mjollnir menacingly. Freyr's face split into a huge grin and then he was laughing

"Relax old friend, there are plenty more giants for you to practice on"

Thor's laugh was deep and menacing

"Well now you have to back up that big talk. You take the next giant and I shall time you"

Freyr nodded thoughtfully then looked around at the section of wall they had cleared

"I accept. Still it is getting rather lonely here, don't you think?"

Thor looked down the wall to where the battle still raged fiercely and said

"Well let's go and make some new friends then!"

Freyr laughed and whooped as he raced off towards the fray with Thor hot on his heels.

Lucifer paced restlessly up and down in front of the reserves, the demon commander had wanted the whole army to move up but at the last minute had decided to hold half of it back. The princess wondered what had caused the change in heart, what did he know? Everywhere Lucifer looked along the wall she could see the giants had taken huge chunks out of the wall. It didn't seem like there was a breach yet though. The giants had grouped into teams of fours and fives. Some worked with hammers while others ripped out stonework with their bare hands. It wouldn't be long now. Occasional flashes of lightning or fire indicated that the gods and witches were still locked in their own personal war, the giants were free to work un-harassed now.

Lucifer could feel the weight of the Demon commanders gaze upon her, he stood so unnaturally still. He reminded her of the Witch hunters. Lucifer briefly wondered if he was the same kind of demon as they were but then shrugged the thought off. What did it matter what kind of thing hid beneath that armour? It was a monster sent here by Satan to destroy this world, end of story. The princess of Hell turned her attention back to the battle and tried to ignore the stare of the Demon commander. She was still desperately trying to think of a way out of this.
