Chapter 37

Present time: Muspell

The activities of the strange and withered creatures continued to baffle Sutur. In the very centre of the cleared area they had dug a long trench. Another group was now dragging a massive stone towards that trench. The stone was huge and bound with countless ropes, a team of nearly one hundred of the withered people had hauled and dragged it across the plains. Sutur couldn't grasp the sense of this, as they neared the trench with the great stone he asked himself. Why dig a hole in the earth just to fill it in again with a large rock? What does that achieve? His wonder turned to outright amusement when the withered work force tried to put the stone in the trench. There was a handful in the trench trying to guide it into place. The others had lost control of it and the massive stone had gone crashing into the hole, crushing the poor creature's lower bodies and pinning them in place. Sutur could see four of these poor things from where he stood. Their upper bodies sticking out of the ground and silently writhing in pain. None of the other workers tried to help or free them, they just carried on with their duties as if nothing had happened.

When the man in the black suit showed up, he noted the state of his workers and calmly drew a knife out his jacket. He walked up to the first worker and showed no mercy or compassion as the blade slit the things throat. He calmly walked up to the next one and repeated the process. No attempts were made to remove the bodies, so they remained like grotesque statues decorating the stone altar.

Once he had finished killing, the man in the suit tucked the bloodied knife away and calmly strode off into the grassy plains as he always did.

Sutur was once again left standing at the border of his lands with absolutely no idea what any of this meant.
