Chapter 18

We dashed leagues away from where we work until we found ourselves approaching a river bank beneath a waterfall. He continued straight through the waterfall before he finally stopped. When I stepped to the other side of the curtain, Sesshomaru had already changed back to his normal form. Looking at him made me wonder how long till I returned to mine and suddenly I found my gaze lowering until it was at eye line with his again. And then his back was all I had to look at as he turned from me.

"What was-why did all those demons try to attack us?" I gasped with wide eyes, trying to think of a reason myself.

"They were coming for you" He stated, his voice back to its old monotone.

"Why?" I couldn't help but ask, feeling confused as to how I could have caused all of that.

"You're officially in heat" He said, his voice short and nowhere near sweet with me.

"But, I thought that's why you marked me as your mate! You said that would keep them from thinking twice about coming after me." I pointed the blame right back at him, agitated at how he spoke to me. Where were the kind words and gentle voice from yesterday?

"It seems that birth control truly was suppressing your hormones. Now that your body has transitioned from preparing to in heat, the pheromones it is now releasing is so strong that any demon that manages to get its hands on you would properly tear the flesh from your neck to destroy my mark before fearing it."

I couldn't help but cover my neck with my hands, just picturing what he said. "I thought demons were supposed to be stronger than humans. How can they let themselves be overcome by a pretty scent. I mean, seriously, if we hadn't stopped those demons they would have surely killed each other just to get to me, then. It's just nonsense!"

"Don't question what you don't know. It might seem stupid, but like you said demons are strong, and they want stronger offspring as well. Your pheromones tell them that a child bared by the owner of the 'pretty scent' would indeed be one of the strongest in this region." Sesshomaru dropped his armor from his shoulder for the first time since I first found him injured and I could see his shoulders trembling. "As long as we stay in here until your cycle has ended we should be safe. The waterfall will serve as a barrier, washing your scent away before it can get any further."

"And how long does it take for a heat cycle to end?" I asked hoping to hear '2 hours' or '30 minutes'

"If we wait it out, approximately 7 days."

"If we wait it out...does that mean there's another way?" I asked nervously, already regretting the answer to this question.

"Or you can sate the heat. If you do that, then it will dissipate instantly." He answered.

"How can I-Sesshomaru!" I gasped when he suddenly turned around. His shoulders had been trembling because his chest heaved heavily as if he was fighting something back within him. His eyes were a bright red, but this time they did not glow out of anger.

"Just because I have the strength to control myself does not mean your scent does not affect my body the same as those other demons." His voice came out husky and deep as he stepped closer to me. He paused with each step, almost looking like it pained him to be near me. "Even now, your body tries to prove to me its worthy enough to care for children." He continued, trying to explain his anguish.
