   ・・・ xx ・・・

On the other side of the window,
the world blurred into colors.

The steady rumble of the car sounded in his ear.

Tick.
Tock.

Tick.
Tock.

Tick.
Tock.

Ao was sitting at the backseat.

Monica, along with their driver, was sitting in front.

It was so quiet.

So far, no one had breathed a single word.

It was as if they were wrapped in a thin silence,
heading to a destination that Ao never thought he would go back to.

"... 'Home', isn't that it?"

Ao stared outside, unmoving.

The sceneries that they passed by were soon left behind and forgotten.

He blinked.

In his hand, his phone felt cold.

The screen displayed the message he had read only a few minutes ago.

He had been about to write a message to Rie, explaining his absence in the apartment.

Before he could finish typing though,
he was surprised to see that she had sent one to him first.

It contained only a few words.

It's okay. You can go.
I'll take care of the apartment for you.

   ・・・ xxi ・・・

Ao closed his eyes slowly.

He hated this.

The way that Rie had known what he was going to choose despite what he had told her.

The way that he was now going back to the father who had once abandoned and scorned him.

The way that there was an uncomfortable buzz in his ear and a lump in his throat and a pain somewhere in his chest.

His squeezed the phone tightly.

His hands were shaking.

His low breathing was unsteady.

His head felt too light.

There was a specific name for this feeling.

He was... scared.

"—That's right.
You're scared.

Scared of what will happen.
