Prologue

Small feet hit  the ground with soft thuds and the door to the wagon was softly opened and closed.

The intruder tiptoed to the bed and leaned slightly over the sleeping figure. Black curls hid most of the sleeper's face.

The intruder's breath caressed the sleeper's cheek.

Then the sleeper opened his eyes. "Milenka," he said reprimanding, "you know you should not be here."

The girl sighed stubbornly and sat down on the makeshift bed.

"Grandmother will scold you again," the boy told her.

Milenka gave a mischievous smile and her companion shook his head. "Yes, I know you are her favorite. Still, you should not be here."

Milenka sighed again, this time sadly, and she cast her eyes down.

"Another nightmare?" her friend asked her and she nodded. The boy sighed and after a moment of debating with himself he held back the covers. "Come then."

Milenka smiled happily and crawled in the offered space. The boy covered both of them as she lay down. "Just be sure you are gone before she wakes up."
