Covers are important. They're the first thing someone sees, which means they need to look nice.
If they look like this:

It's inviting. I'd pick that book up anyday.
But if it looks like this:

I would much rather cry for 3 weeks than pick a book up that has a cover like that.
Don't get me wrong, I have read books that had covers like that when I was desperate and the books were absolutely great. Cover though? Not so much.

If you can't make your own, there are plenty of cover shops out there that will happily make you one.
