I was literally going to bed when my phone started ringing. For God’s sake, who would it be now? I was exhausted, barely able to keep my eyes open, and to be honest, I considered not answering whoever it was. I had arrived a few minutes ago, and after taking Kirsten home and going back to my place, I just took off my shoes and walked towards my bedroom, ready to throw myself in bed and sleep. But when I was about to do that – so close to the edge of my bed – there it was, my phone ringing again. Stupid people, why couldn’t they simply leave me alone?

Groaning, I turned around and walked back to the living room, where the sound came from. As soon as I looked at the screen, I frowned, wondering why Lana was calling me now that I had just left her house. Maybe I’d forgotten something there, but I couldn’t remember what. Whatever it was, she could’ve called me tomorrow. Why to bother me so late?

I ignored my thoughts and pressed the green button, leading the phone to my ear right after.

“Lana?” I asked, aware of the fact that my voice sounded as if I had just woken up. “Is everything okay?”

It took her a while to reply, and I could hear her hardly breathing on the other end of the call; her muffled sobs preventing her from talking. What had happened?

“Lana, what’s going on? Is Angel okay?”

“She’s fine, Harry. I just…” her voice sounded worse than what I thought it would be, and my heart started beating faster at the thought of what could’ve happened. Why was Lana crying? “I’m sorry to call you so late, I know you’re tired but… Please, I need you here again.”

I didn’t think twice before saying I’d be there in five, and to be honest I was not only worried, but also curious about what had happened. As fast as I could, I put my shoes back on and grabbed the car keys not even bothering to look for my jacket right now. Lana needed me and things seemed to be pretty serious. When I finally got there, it hadn’t been even ten minutes since she called me, and I was glad I could make it that fast.

The woman and her daughter were already at the door, both of them with red and swollen eyes, worry plastered to their features. Angel was fine, so was Lana… So what had happened? I didn’t have time to ask because when I was about to do so, both of them were already inside my car, and I didn’t have much of an option.

“Go to Kirsten’s,” was all Lana said, and then it all made sense.

She wasn’t okay. What had gone wrong? She was fine when I left her there.

I had no doubts that jackass had something to do with it. He didn’t like it a bit when he saw me carrying his girlfriend towards the front door, and I hesitated to put her in his arms when I realized how pissed he was, but the guy didn’t give me a choice. Even if I wanted to turn around and go away with her, he just took her from me and walked in without saying a word. I was obligated to leave.

And now I had to come back because he had done something to her. All I could do on my way there was pray that she wasn’t as bad as that day at the mall. Hopefully she’d gotten just a few more bruises and Lana would fix them. She’d be fine.

Finally, I parked in front of her house and Lana swallowed her tears hard, fighting them back.

“Keep Angel here,” she asked, her eyes showing me so much concern I couldn’t do anything but nod.
