Kali’s POV

I kept a bag of ice on my cheek all the way to Aunt Emma’s house. It kept the swelling and the bruise away. I knew by tonight I would have to explain it to my parents. We pulled into Aunt Emma’s driveway. Her navy two story house sat on the manicured lawn. Ben’s big wheel sat by the front steps. He was one of the most adorable three year olds I knew. He and Adam were born on the same day, basically like twins. There was a bright yellow Jeep Wrangler sitting in the driveway. I shrieked and jumped out of the car.

“Chase?” I shouted. I rounded the corner of the house. Dad and Uncle Emmet were talking as they cooked steak on the grill. Adam and Ben were playing vet on JJ. Uncle David was flirting shamelessly with Aunt Emma and Mom. No one took him seriously, I thought it was funny. Chase sat at the picnic table with Kendal. Chase looked up when I came around the corner. I tackled him holding him in a big hug.

“Hey best friend, long time no see.” He laughed.

“Told you Jace, these James girls just can’t stay away from us,” Uncle David said, jerking his head toward his son.

“Jayden, I’d watch your back. She’s got Sam, even if she is grounded from him.” Kendal said.

“I broke up with Sam,” I shrugged.

“YES!” Chase yelled, kissing my cheek. I rolled my eyes; he was a bigger flirt than his father.

“Why?” Kendal asked, his eyes inspected me.

“You guys are right he’s no good for me,” I said.

“Jack maybe you should take her back home I think she’s sick,” Mom joked as Jack sat beside Kendal.

“Hardy har har,” I said.

“Now you and Jayden can be together,” Jack teased, taking the subject away from Sam.

“Chase,” I mumbled. Jayden Chase was Chase’s real name, but I called him Chase.

“Now you and Chase can be together,” He corrected himself. Chase laughed and threw his arm over my shoulder.

“We’re already together, she just doesn’t know it.” I rolled my eyes at him.

“What happened to your cheek?” Kendal asked. Damn it.

“I went home before I came here and Kali scared me and I accidently hit her,” Jack answered. The lie came so quickly to him it was shocking. It sounded like the truth to me. But of course everyone had to swarm over to inspect my cheek.

“How hard did you hit her Jack?” Dad asked, pulling my chin towards him.

“It doesn’t hurt. I’m fine.” I said. Chase poked it and I flinched, glaring at him. Mom locked eyes with me for a minute, one of those looks that read down deep into your soul. I ripped my eyes away.

“Here put some ice on it,” Aunt Emma said, handing me an ice bag. I pressed it against my cheek and let the cold numb my skin.

“Thanks,” I said.

Ben and Adam came over and handed me a dog biscuit.

“It has medicine in it,” Ben said.

“Thanks, but I don’t eat dog food,” I said, handing the bone back to them.

“JJ liked it,” Adam shrugged. Ben and he went back to playing with JJ.
